Job Description

Position: Journey Meter Technician or Apprentice Meter Technician

Department: Power Department

Status: Fulltime NonExempt (hourly)

Wage Range: $44.30 to $51.51 based on qualification experience and certification

Application Closing Date: May 18 2025

The typical work schedule is MondayThursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:

Apprentice: Performs a variety of apprenticelevel technical duties related to installing maintaining testing reading programming calibrating and repairing watthour and watt/varhour combination meters demand registers and instrument transformers (current and potential).

Journey: Performs a variety of journeylevel technical duties related to the installing maintaining testing reading programing calibrating and repairing watthour and watt/varhour combination meters demand registers and instrument transformers (current and potential) including the associated meter circuit wiring for singlephase meters both selfcontained and Instrument transformer rated polyphase meters both selfcontained and Instrument transformer rated and Net meters.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the close supervision of the Operations Manager.

SUPERVISION GIVEN: None

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Install program and maintain Automated Meter Reading (AMR) Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and other communicationbased metering programs; maintain metering totalizers and other pulse operating equipment.

Investigate meter tampering power quality and billing issues.

Interact with computers for meter programming testing and investigations.

Ensure that all installations are correctly wired according to metering codes and standards to secure the accuracy of revenue metering. Determine the presence of current diversion. Calculate pulse ratios rates and values.

Maintain and process meter inventory meter records and meter paperwork.

Develop and maintain professionalism and effective teamwork in the performance of job duties. Maintain good public relations with Kaysville residents contractors city inspectors suppliers and other contacts.

Openly and effectively collaborate and communicate with coworkers to identify and solve problems and to coordinate resources.

Participate in the planning and coordination of projects with the crew leader supervisor engineering line crews and contractors as assigned.

Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Apprentice level: At least one (1) year of experience in an electrical or line worker field of work; or
  • Journeylevel: Successful completion of a recognized journeylevel Meter Technician Apprenticeship program that includes a minimum of three (3) years of related onthejob training.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Journey:

  • Must be a certified Journey Meter Technician.
  • Must be CPR certified.
  • Must possess a valid Utah drivers license and be deemed insurable to operate city equipment and vehicles; a commercial drivers license (CDL) is preferred.
  • Must be willing to accept oncall assignments.

Apprentice:

  • Must be CPR certified.
  • Must possess a valid Utah drivers license and be deemed insurable to operate city equipment and vehicles; a commercial drivers license (CDL) is preferred.
  • Must be willing to accept oncall assignments.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of local and state metering codes and the application of such codes and standard practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and comply with working rules safety practices regulations and policies including the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and group tailboards.
  • Take the initiative to accomplish the responsibilities of the position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.

Position tasks require a variety of physical activities involving muscular strain related to walking standing stooping sitting reaching and lifting (50 lbs.). Essential functions require talking hearing and seeing. Common and complex eye hand and finger dexterity exists. Mental application utilizes memory for details verbal instructions emotional stability discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbents of the position perform normally in an outdoor physical environment. Daily travel is required in the normal course of job performance. Regular exposure to changing weather conditions and hazards common to primary and secondary power systems.
