Job Description

Job Title: Early Childhood Paraprofessional (Bilingual Spanish/English)

Education: High School Diploma or GED; Some college hours preferred. All teacher assistants newly hired and working or at a site supported with Title funds must hold an associate degree or have 2 years of post secondary education or be a high school graduate and pass a PARAPRO or OGET test.

Training or experience required: Previous work or volunteer experience with children teenagers and or clerical experience preferred.

Reports to: Building Principal

Salary Schedule: Paraprofessional

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist with instruction and activities for individuals or for groups as assigned by the teacher. Supervise students in instructional settings offcampus activities and during noninstructional activities such as recess assemblies emergency drills lunch periods etc. On occasion may supervise students in the teachers absence.
  • Prepare create or adapt instructional materials as directed by the teacher. Assist students with assignments. Setup and operate equipment for instructional purposes.
  • Serve as chief source of information and assistance for substitute teachers.
  • Assist teachers with student behavior management strategies. Respond appropriately to off task when necessary. Alert teacher to special needs of students.
  • Grade student work; record grades; take attendance; complete necessary paperwork and other records for students.
  • May assist with minor first aid.
  • Operate photocopier laminator and duplicator. May operate computer. Assist teacher in obtaining supplies necessary for scheduled activities: i.e. paints brushes construction paper science supplies etc. Assist teachers with compiling students work to send home.
  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

Spanish/English bilingual a must.

Successful performance of the job requires good customer service/people skills and to handle problems and provide information and technical assistance as requested. It requires complying with safety guidelines and policies to reduce accident or injury to staff or to students. It requires following school dress standards proper attendance or leave policies and other workhabits concerns for staff. Creativity initiative and effective problem solving are critical to the success of the position. Perform such tasks to the ultimate benefit of the educational program. An incumbent in this position will utilize discretion ingenuity and independent judgment due to the complexity of the job. This job requires frequent bending/stooping and occasional to frequent squatting/crouching reaching above the shoulder and pushing and pulling. There is occasional lifting up to 40 pounds to assist the lifting of chairs classroom equipment and supplies. The incumbent must have the dexterity to operate keyboards computers copy machines and other office/instructional machines. Must be able to supervise students in the classroom and outside. Must be able to communicate with student and parents. Must be able to get around the classroom library cafeteria campus etc. Must be able to assist students with normal activities.
