About the Department:

Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University. SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at Mason including but not limited to initial and followup assessment history taking physical exam of patients utilization of differential diagnosis appropriate interventions consultations and referrals as indicated and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provides services to faculty staff and visitors on an asneeded basis. SHS operates its main clinic on the Mason Fairfax Campus and smaller clinics on the Mason Square (Arlington) and SciTech Campuses (Prince William).

About the Position:

The clinic nurse supports the clinic health care providers with ambulatory nursing health care skills and services. He/she maintains a safe and orderly flow of patients through the clinic. The nurse participates in student immunization review and administration allergy treatment immunotherapy mass flu clinics telephone and inperson triage provides wound care treatments and medication administration ordered by the providers. In addition the clinic nurse participates in peer review CQI Risk Management Utilization Review and provides input for policy and procedure process changes or revisions.

Responsibilities:

Triage (Telephonic and InPerson)

  • Delivers safe and effective triage to students walking in or calling the clinic for acute appointments;
  • Utilizes approved protocols for triage and complies with documentation requirements as stated in the triage policy and procedure; and
  • Manages patients per clinic policies and protocols including ordering testing in collaboration with providers.

Clinical Skills

  • Proficiency in all aspects of required clinical procedures and treatments;
  • Completes annual Competency review requirements;
  • Maintains safe efficient and orderly flow of patients through the clinic;
  • Accurately utilizes the EMR and Nurse Order Monitor for documentation and clinic flow monitoring; and
  • Performs phlebotomy and CLIA waived testing.

Immunizations and Allergy Immunotherapy

  • Accurately and safely delivers immunization administration and allergy immunotherapy; and
  • Verifies and transcribes external immunization records.

Preceptor/Mentor forBSNStudents and New Hires Clinical

  • Participates as a preceptor forBSNstudents as assigned;
  • Provides input and offers support as a mentor to futureGMUnurse graduates; and
  • Participates as a nurse preceptor to new hires.

Represents SHS at University wide events and outreach efforts as schedule allows

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited diploma Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in nursing program from an institute of higher education;
  • Registered Nurse License in VA or valid Multistate License;
  • CPR Healthcare Provider Certification;
  • Ability to apply the elements of the Nursing Process including assessment developing nursing diagnosis planning implementing nursing interventions and evaluating the nursing plan of care;
  • Knowledge of adult ambulatory care practices;
  • Knowledge of Adolescent and Adult Immunization Requirements;
  • Experience using Electronic Health Record;
  • Ability to apply excellent communication skills; and
  • Experience typically obtained in one year in a medical office or other outpatient/ambulatory care office (preferably adult medicine or college health).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BSN Preferred;
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy and IV initiation and monitoring;
  • Knowledge of administering EKGs and Nebulizer treatments;
  • Knowledge of Allergy Immunotherapy;
  • Knowledge of unique needs of college students; and
  • Ability to apply Triage skills.
