In this key role the Legal & Claims Counsel plays an essential part in managing a wide range of legal and claimsrelated matters with care and expertise. By skillfully balancing legal responsibilities and claims handling the Counsel ensures these activities are carried out in line with the Companys strategic goals and compliance requirements. This position blends legal insight with practical problemsolving to offer wellrounded support across various scenarios.
Primary Responsibilities:
Handling Cargo Claims and monitoring hull and Personal Injury claims:
- Act as a central point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders including Samskip group and offices clients insurers P&I Clubs surveyors principals agents customs authorities terminal operators captains lawyers and others.
- Handle all aspects of cargo claims independently ensuring timely and thorough resolution.
- Provide sound advice to colleagues clients and principals regarding claimsrelated matters.
Legal:
- Offer guidance on all terms and conditions (B/L) questions and other maritime law questions.
- Address general legal inquiries for Samskip head office in the Netherlands as well as international operations.
- Review and assess commercial contracts and local contracts to ensure compliance and mitigate risk.
- Support incident and risk management by coordinating responses to maritime and landbased incidents.
- Lead efforts in resolving longstanding container issues seeking outofcourt settlements or pursuing legal action when necessary.
Skills and Competencies:
- Academic background in Law with a minimum of a bachelors degree; a Masters in Maritime or Commercial Law is strongly preferred.
- 5 years of relevant experience including maritime claims handling either inhouse or in private practice.
- Solid understanding of both operational and commercial aspects of the maritime industry.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
- Fluent in written and spoken English; Dutch is an advantage.
- Adaptable with the ability to thrive in a dynamic and highpressure environment.
- Holds a valid work permit and is currently residing in the Netherlands.
