Job Description

DMPS is looking for a Aviation Teacher to provide Piloting instruction for students at the following location:

  • Central Campus

TITLE:Aviation Teacher

POSITION TYPE: TCHR

HIRING SPECIFICATIONS:

:

Required Education and Experience:

1. Four years of documented work experience in aviation (pilot aviation maintenance aviation operations or related field) or hold Iowa teaching license and have interest in aviation or eligible for a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Teaching License.

2. Possession of or the ability to obtain a current and valid FAA certification:

a. For pilot instruction: Basic Ground Instructor or higher (e.g. Certified Flight Instructor CFI Advanced Ground Instructor preferred).

b. For mechanics instruction: FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Mechanic Certificate.

Desired:

1. Teaching experience in a high school community college flight school or corporate setting.

2. Experience developing partnerships with industry organizations employers and higher education institutions to support student workbased learning opportunities.

3. Eligible for DMACC or Community College Certification for concurrent enrollment programs.

4. Additional careerrelated certifications such as:

a. Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)

b. Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII)

c. Inspection Authorization (IA) for aviation mechanics

d. OSHA10/30 certification (for safety instruction)

5. Experience with aviation simulation technology and flight simulators.

6. Demonstrated success supporting students toward FAA exam completion certifications or career placement in aviation fields

BASIC FUNCTION:The Aviation Program at Central Campus is designed to develop technical skills discipline and character in high school students preparing them for successful pathways in aviation careers and beyond. The program provides handson learning in both pilot training and aviation mechanics emphasizing industry standards safety protocols and leadership within the aviation field. Instructors will focus on the four basic indicators of professional success: technical proficiency discipline safety and teamwork. Through classroom instruction flight simulation lab work and mechanical projects students will build foundational knowledge aligned with FAA and industry standards. Instructors will also promote student engagement through participation in aviationrelated community events career fairs and industry partnerships encouraging a deep understanding of the aviation profession and its responsibilities. With a focus on realworld application and personal growth instructors will help students gain the skills and confidence needed to pursue careers in aviation or postsecondary education in aerospace fields.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Implement established curriculum in Aviation Sciences Pilot Training Fundamentals and Aviation Mechanics.

2. Ensure students understand aviation theory aerodynamics aircraft systems and regulations.

3. Foster a sense of personal pride technical excellence and responsibility among all students enrolled in the Aviation Program.

4. Instill and reinforce respect for FAA regulations safety protocols and industry standards as critical foundations for successful aviation careers.

5. Maintain balanced excellence in academic instruction flight simulation mechanical lab work and applied aviation projects.

6. Maintain accurate records of student progress certifications and lab performance ensuring frequent updates.

7. Organize and support aviation field trips industry visits or guest speaker events that expose students to realworld aviation environments.

8. Incorporate handson skill development into weekly instruction including preflight planning simulator hours mechanical diagnostics and safety inspections.

9. Submit required curriculum plans certification updates and program performance reports as required by district and state guidelines.

10. Prepare students for FAA written exams ground school proficiency or certifications.

11. Develop a comprehensive and detailed training schedule that covers all instructional days and aligns with academic and industry calendars.

12. Conduct program selfassessments annually and participate in external program evaluations as required.

13. Submit annual activity reports industry partnership updates and program improvement plans to building and district administration.

14. Establish program goals annually focusing on student certifications internship placements and career readiness.

15. Lead train and motivate all students to reach their full technical and academic potential in the field of aviation.

16. Prepare graduating seniors for advanced training opportunities college programs flight schools or direct industry employment.

17. Maintain accountability for all program equipment simulators tools aircraft parts and supplies.

18. Oversee fundraising events (if applicable) to support program enhancements student travel or equipment upgrades.

19. Demonstrate consistent progress on meeting the Iowa Teaching Standards.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position):

  1. Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  2. Maintain confidentiality.
  3. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public students and other employees.
  4. Assist with other duties as may be assigned.

FT/PT:Full Time (7.75 hour day)195 Days (199 Days for new employees)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Standing walking sitting bending/stooping reaching/pushing/pulling lifting carrying

WORKING CONDITIONS:Mostly indoors with some outdoor responsibilities during recess and arrival/dismissal
