What you will be doing:
You will be working directly with municipal and Tribal governments on implementing sustainable solid waste and diversion programs that are protective of human health and the environment. This position primarily works with rural Alaskan communities on finding solutions to maintain and improve their landfills.

The Solid Waste Program is the program responsible for the implementation of the State of Alaska solid waste regulations. Our mission is to protect public health and the environment by ensuring that landfills in Alaska are operated and maintained in compliance with State regulations and our Programs goals. We strive to work cooperatively with landfill Operators and Owners on finding solutions through leveraging resources and working collaboratively with others in order to achieve the common goal of having a landfill that is protective of human health and the environment. We are a small team within the Department but we have a proven history of success with meeting and exceeding the goals that we set for ourselves in order to achieve our mission.

The position is located on the main floor of the ADEC building in Fairbanks located at 610 University Ave and the location offers free parking and plug ins for your vehicle. The office space offers a full sit/stand hydraulic desk in a space with a sunny window; flexible schedules are allowable within the first year and hybrid telework schedules are an option for this position once training and independent capacity to complete tasks on time is achieved.
The Fairbanks office has been acknowledged by the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce for being a Family Friendly Workplace. We are a small group of five but we achieve a lot by working well together and supporting one another. There is independence in organizing the daytoday work responsibilities and in determining the best way to meet the goals for each project. This position includes field work to inspect landfills during the summer and the opportunity to participate in trainings and conferences in the winter months.

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the following competencies
Equivalent to those typically gained by:
A bachelors degree from an accredited college in an environmental physical biological or natural science; engineering; planning; or natural resources.
AND
Professional experience developing knowledge and skills in environmental regulations pollution control environmental damage recovery or programs to improve or protect environmental quality; or learning to evaluate the potential environmental and socioeconomic impacts of construction projects; prepare environmental documentation; and determine negotiate and monitor permitted activities.
