Job Description

Location: Fort McMurray preferred any AER office location will be considered

Employment Type: Full Time Permanent

Salary Range: SP3 Level 5 $92320 $115400 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors including education qualifications experience and internal equity. This position may be eligible to receive a Northern Living allowance. Northern Living allowances are provided based on the location of the position and where an employee primarily works and resides.

As an Engagement Specialist youll take proactive steps to enhance awareness of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) initiatives through outreach efforts relationship nurturing and strategizing engagement activities focused on regulatory evolution and modernization. You will provide information and education to the public Indigenous communities industry municipalities and environmental groups within Alberta. Your role is responsive to issues and concerns raised to the AER and you will be comfortable assisting others to work through conflict. You are also equipped to support your colleagues to manage challenging behaviours exhibited by external parties.

As an Engagement Specialist you are a subject matter expert in several areas including effective communication engagement assessment and planning and you are knowledgeable in providing advice about potentially impacted communities and Albertans related to incidents or regulatory orders.

As a passionate Engagement Specialist you will be part of a supportive tight knit team placed strategically throughout Alberta who work hard everyday to support the entire organization.

What your daytoday will look like:

  • Support the organizations strategic goals ensuring your priorities reflect building the AERs credibility and trust.

  • Interact with local industry Indigenous communities and stakeholders about the AER and our mandate throughout the entire lifecycle of oil gas and mining activities.

  • Represent the AER at local meetings and multistakeholder tables providing holistic insights to regional challenges and opportunities.

  • Interpret and navigate regulatory information and processes for others influencing improvement opportunities for the AER. Anticipate and respond to inquiries complaints and feedback.

  • Assess and plan engagement as new decisions regulatory tools and AER initiatives are contemplated analysed and installed including public feedback processes.

  • Ensure the provision of situationally aware advice to internal business units. Ensure local intelligence including trends potential gaps and opportunities are elevated to influence an effective organizational response.

  • Deescalate conflict and make appropriate referrals to other AER technical and professional experts.

What were looking for in you:

  • Technical Diploma in Conflict Resolution Communications Education Environmental Land Agent Land Management or a related Field.

  • 5 years experience working with industry Indigenous communities and stakeholders.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience in effective communication adult education and public speaking is a must.

  • Proven experience in conflict resolution with the ability to adapt to change and evolving work priorities.

  • Knowledge of AER mandate energy industry government industry and public perspectives related to energy industry.

  • Public policy and policy implementation processes conflict resolution facilitation training or certification is considered an asset.

  • Indigenous awareness training H2S Alive Standard First Aid training is considered an asset.

  • Ability to work independently and make situational decisions experience with online engagement techniques including social media.

Additional Information:

  • Preplacement Medical required.

  • Possess a fully valid class 5 drivers license along with a positive driving record.

  • Required physical demands: must be able to lift over 30 lbs.

  • Additional training required but will be provided: First Aid and H2S Alive.

  • Individuals who reside outside of Fort McMurray are required to be onsite in Fort McMurray for a minimum of one week per month or more frequently based on business needs. When working from their home location they are expected to follow the hybrid work arrangements applicable to all AER employees.

  • A combination of field work and office work is a requirement.
