Role Purpose:

The key purpose of the position is to support residents in residential treatment to establish healthier lifestyles free of problematic alcohol and drug use. The AOD Residential Nurse (RN) contributes to the life of the program by providing clinical nursing services including withdrawal related nursing interventions to clients within the Therapeutic Community (TC) environment.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Safely assist with routine pathology collection and provide effective wound care within scope of practice.
  • Administer medication as prescribed and liaising with pharmacist.
  • Monitor and communicate Urinary Drug Screen results to medical staff.
  • Implement nursing assessments reminders and gather data as needed.
  • Provide support and reassurance to residents; assessing triaging and responding to resident medical needs.
  • Maintain medical stocks including all first aid kits used at the facility and offsite in vehicles and outings.

Who are WE looking for


To be successful in this role you must hold the below qualifications/experience

  1. Registration (current) with APHRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) as a Registered Nurse
  2. AOD competencies for Health Professionals or a commitment to obtain the competencies within 12 months of employment *(Refer Appendix A)
  3. Highly developed clinical nursing skills including comprehensive assessment crisis intervention therapeutic communication problem solving conflict resolution decision making goal setting case planning development monitoring and evaluation.
  4. Excellent case management and group management skills and the ability to work with complex and demanding residents.
  5. Demonstrated ability to engage residents in dialogue and develop a therapeutic relationship.
  6. An ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team open to giving and receiving feedback about self and the capacity to recognise and resolve interpersonal conflict.
  7. Experience in supervising enrolled and or student nurses.
  8. Demonstrated ability to engage in the process of creating acquiring and transferring knowledge to inform the organisational processes.
  9. Expertise: Demonstrated experience and knowledge of highquality therapeutic service delivery coupled with a strong theoretical and practice base in the principles of recovery and a commitment to community education and health promotion
  10. Planning and Organising: Ability to meet deadlines balance competing demands and to priorities work effectively. Capacity to continuously review and make responsive changes where needed to ensure a high standard of service delivery. Ability to meet requirements of funding sources and provide data as necessary.
  11. Demonstrated Capabilities: Ability to manage relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Highly developed judgement decisionmaking conflict resolution representation and analytical skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated experience in preparing and presenting reports briefings and correspondence.

OV requires staff in clinical positions to have the following competencies (or their equivalent). Where people do not already have these competencies OV will invest in the staffs professional development by providing them through our registered training organisation (RTO).
