This is a rare opportunity to step into a leadership role in a thriving local multiplatform newsroom full of smart journalists. The team at CBC Ottawa produces daily and investigative news on digital radio and television.

As the Executive Producer of News you are the goto person for journalistic decisions for all programs and platforms. You will ensure CBC Ottawa sets the citys news agenda. You will guide programming decisions around breaking news events. You have an indepth understanding of CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices and are responsible for ensuring your team functions within these guidelines. You can make quick decisions when required but youre also a creative thinker with a track record of finding solutions to complex problems.

You lead on all news output leading daily storytelling and driving major content projects that anticipate the needs of the audience. Importantly you understand the needs of our different platforms audio video and text and ensure our journalism is always of the highest quality.

Your understanding of the regions cultural communities also informs your journalistic decision making.

Your collaborative approach and clear communication style inspires teams to achieve the stations strategic objectives which youll establish with the Executive Producer of Audio and the Managing Editor.

You lead by example and are committed to an inclusive and respectful workplace culture. You will play a key leadership role in hiring new members of the team and ensuring continuous development opportunities within a rapidly changing and competitive media environment.

Key Tasks:

  • Provides editorial direction for all news stories.

  • Works collaboratively with teams across the CBC to ensure stories are shared with the widest possible audience.

  • Ensures that meaningful specific feedback is provided to members of the news team while also leading longterm development plans for staff members.

  • Leads the planning of special projects and coverage plans.

  • Attends scheduling meetings

  • Allocates resources against strategic outcomes.

  • Plans leads and assigns breaking news coverage on all platforms including special programming as needed.

  • Coordinates legal support and provides editorial judgment as needed.

  • Responds to complaints from the audience.

  • Is capable of performing all or part of the function or duties of an equivalent or lower classification.

  • Works collaboratively with the stations Executive Producer of Audio to execute strategic goals.

  • Knowledge of and commitment to CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise both quick editorial judgement and long term strategic planning.

  • Highly developed vetting skills.

  • A commitment to quality work at all levels and on all platforms.

  • An unwavering focus on serving the needs of the audience.

  • A proficiency working with audio video and digital and social media

  • A mindset of continuous learning and constant evolution.

  • Proven ability to foster a vibrant and inclusive team culture.

  • Exceptional communication skills.

  • Demonstrated coaching and mentorship skills.

  • Experience planning long term projects organizing logistics and juggling resources against strategic goals.

Additional Requirements:

  • University degree or equivalent.

  • Seven (7) years of related experience

  • Ability to work flexible hours as required.

  • Highly developed organizational skills.

  • An understanding of the City of Ottawa beyond Parliament Hill is a key asset.

  • French language skills are an asset.
