Job Description

DEFINITION

Under the direction of the Coordinator of Special Education and Student Behavior assist in providing direct occupational therapy services to children and participate as a team member by assisting in the assessment of children to determine current levels of motor development sensory integration educational concern and the childs developmental areas of need. Utilize specialized equipment and treatment techniques to facilitate implementation of individual educational programs related to motor skills development.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under direction of the Occupational Therapist in conjunction with the Coordinator and site administrators the Occupational Therapy Assistant will:

Assist in providing direct occupational therapy services to students according to Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals and objectives.

Document therapy received and record progress.

Maintain related logs and prepare a variety of reports.

Collaborate with the Occupational Therapist to assist with the assessment of students to determine nature and extent of motor disabilities.

Assist with data collection and the preparation of assessment reports.

Consult with family and staff on the appropriate implementation of educational programs as they relate to the development of motor skills.

Recommend and implement use of appropriate materials activities and assistive devices designed to facilitate the development and care of children with motor disabilities. Demonstrate educational and developmental strategies and activities to staff and families. Communicate with other therapists district staff and professionals serving students. Participate in presentations and inservice offerings as necessary.

Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

Knowledge of:

The intellectual sensory and physical development of children.

Techniques used in the assessment and treatment of disabilities.

Principles methods and equipment used in occupational therapy.

Occupational therapy techniques used in the assessment and treatment of disabilities.

The educational and developmental needs of children with specific disabilities.

Ability to:

Assist in the assessments of the developmental and sensory status and educational needs of children.

Judge normal and abnormal motor development of children.

Determine educational and developmental areas of concern.

Work collaboratively with families and district staff.

Make oral presentations to staff and large and small groups.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Work effectively with individuals from various ethnic and cultural groups.

Safely lift and move students with assistance as needed.

Work effectively with minimal supervision.

Training and Experience:

Any combination of training experience and/or education equivalent to graduation from an accredited school in a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. Additional instruction in child development including neurological physical and psychological training is recommended; Clinical affiliation in pediatrics is desirable; Experience working with children in an occupational therapy or educational setting is desirable.

Certification and Licenses:

Possession of a First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate issued by an authorized agency. California registration as an Occupational Therapy Assistant.

Working Conditions:

Will be working at multiple elementary school sites in classrooms labs and outside. Possession of a valid California drivers license and availability of private transportation (mileage expense allowance provided).

ATTACHMENTS: MUST UPLOAD REQUIRED FIRST AID/CPR/AED CERTIFICATIONS AND BE REGISTERED IN CALIFORNIA AS AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT FOR APPLICATION TO BE CONSIDERED COMPLETE.
