Job Description

Working/Functional Title

GLBRC BAF Research Technologist

Position Summary

The GLBRC Biomass Analytics Facility (BAF) is one of the GLBRC Core Facilities and provides analytical services ranging from highthroughput digestibility screening to detailed cell wall compositional analysis of all biomass feedstocks generated by the Center. The successful candidate will work as part of the team to perform standard and HTP biomass composition and digestibility assays; generate data and compile analyze and summarize results; keep accurate records of all experiments results and other laboratory records; communicate concerns expectations turnaround times etc. to supervisor; participate in training and perform laboratory activities in compliance with laboratory safety regulations and procedures; maintain and operate analytical instruments; and assist in coordinating research and other laboratory operations.

The candidate will:

  • Perform routine wet chemistry procedures and utilize robotic systems for grinding weighing and liquid handling as well as other instrumentations to conduct detailed biomass compositional assays.
  • Generate quality data including QC experiments to validate data; keep accurate and detailed laboratory records; compile and summarize results; and provide reports/updates to supervisor.
  • Operate and maintain analytical instruments used in routine assays (training will be provided).
  • Maintain efficient laboratory workflow by coordinating tasks with coworkers; maintain a safe and clean laboratory work environment; prepare stock solutions and instrument standards; order materials supplies and other consumables.

This position is a support staff position and does not qualify for a US Work Visa. All applicants must be immediately eligible to work in the United States without transferring a current work visa to MSU or requiring any MSU work visa sponsorship.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a fouryear college degree program in Biochemistry Chemistry Biology Plant Science or related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • At least six months of laboratory experience
  • Experience using spreadsheets or equivalent analytical software for analysis of data sets

Desired Qualifications

Desired Education and Experience

  • Candidates with experience operating maintaining and troubleshooting analytical instrumentation (e.g. GCMS HPLC Spectroscopy) are preferred
  • Candidates with a relevant analytical chemistry lab and/or research experience in the field of biomass analytics and lignocellulosic feedstocks are preferred
  • Familiarity with statistical data analysis
  • Successful candidates will have some experience in instrumental analysis and demonstrate significant attention to detail
  • Demonstrates clear recordkeeping skills with special attention to data traceability
  • Demonstrates superior oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient independent and flexible individuals who can manage multiple ongoing projects.
