Job Description

Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins focus on research teaching and patient care and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicinestrengthening the institution through partnerships with donors alumni volunteer leaders faculty students staff and patients.


Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 23 days per week. The manager will confirm the teams core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.


The Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) is one of the leading schools of arts and sciences in the nation. Under the leadership of Chris Celenza the James B. Knapp Dean our mission is devoted to discovery that creates new knowledge and solutions that better the world. As the largest school on the Homewood Campus it has more than 72000 alumni (undergraduate and graduate) and there are currently more than 50 departments programs centers and institutes.


The Senior Associate Director of Donor Relations plays an integral role within KSAS with direct management and execution of the schools donor relations program. The Sr. Associate Director has direct supervision of 2 staff including the associate director of donor relations and a donor relations coordinator. Reporting to the Senior Director of Development the Sr. Associate Director is a leader within the office and builds crossinstitutional relationships including with and central development and departments to strengthen strategic partnerships and achieve our goals.


The candidate should have a passion for higher education fundraising and finds joy in collaboration strategic thinking and building donor experience programs. They will need be skilled in managing and prioritizing multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively in a complex multilayered and fastpaced environment.


Key responsibilities:

Donor Relations Strategy and Direction:

  • Develop and oversee donor relations strategy for the Krieger School including determining best practices processes and creative approaches to highlighting philanthropic impact
  • Work directly with frontline fundraisers to implement proactive strategic stewardship plans for principal and major git donors and prospects. Demonstrate familiarization with gift officer portfolios and work plans
  • Work closely with colleagues across DAR specifically Office of Stewardship and Donor Engagement (SDE) to ensure adherence to university policies and procedures
  • Work closely with Administrative Manager Deans Office and others on fund administration
  • Oversight and implementation of foreseeable projects for the donor relations team such as the endowment reporting process CRM (JHAS) system and campaign stewardship
  • Serve as donor relations manager (DRM) for a small portfolio of donors
  • Advise on gift acceptance and gift agreement language as needed
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of news and other happenings at the Krieger School in order to be able to strategically share information with donors and prospects

Stewardship:

  • Work with the Senior Director of Development and central leadership to coordinate and manage an impactful personalized and efficient stewardship program
  • Manage the schools stewardship reporting which includes scholarship professorships fellowships faculty and student awards and all other endowed and various current use funds
  • Collaborate with departments faculty and students and promote through stewardship initiatives (such as Thank View campaigns annual giving or stewardship or appeals DAR and/or KSAS communications)
  • Liaise directly with KSAS departments and faculty to collect annual recipient and endowment information
  • In collaboration with the Director of Constituent Engagement oversight on stewardshipfocused events such as professorship dedications and donor thank you gatherings
  • Works with gift officers as needed to report on and/or provide information on department specific funding for stewardship purposes

Acknowledgements:

  • Oversee and manage a timely acknowledgement process
  • Review and edit gift log and acknowledgment letters
  • Work with KSAS Communications as needed to keep template letters updated on an annual basis

Management Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct supervision training and guidance to the donor relations team. Adhere to hiring management and HR best practices
  • Develop and implement the annual operational plans for the donor relations team in support of institutional and divisional development goals. Measure progress guide deliverable management provide feedback and coaching and hold staff accountable for results
  • Lead all donor relations staff meetings and retreats to ensure collaboration and productivity


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree.
  • Five years professional experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • At least two years of management experience required. Experience should be in fundraising donor relations/stewardship volunteer engagement or other relevant field
  • Experience in an academic and/or higher education development environment preferred
  • Demonstrated success in project management and ability to work through multiple layers to adhere to timelines and donor experience goals
  • Ability to work in a highlycomplex multidepartmental environment to establish priorities set objectives and achieve stated goals
  • Must be a highly motivated goal oriented strategic thinker with the ability to work independently determine and set priorities manage multiple and interdisciplinary projects and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality
  • Ability to perform within time constraints with a high degree of accuracy effectiveness and diplomacy
  • Work collaboratively with highlevel institutional leadership faculty and development peers as part of a team
  • Excellent selfawareness. Demonstrate sound judgement in situations requiring independent decisionmaking
  • Excellent interpersonal verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to learn new software
  • Ability and willingness to travel
  • Onsite presence of 3 days/week at a minimum
  • A strong desire to serve as a champion and advocate for the mission of Johns Hopkins University and the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences
