Main Purpose of Job
Toteach American Sign Language (ASL) class (as a primary language not as asecond language) to deaf and hard of hearing preschool to Grade 8 students.
POSITION DUTIES
TeachASL to students to include understanding of ASL linguistics such as handshapegrammar and other parameters Deaf Culture Deaf History and ASL/DeafLiterature; implement K12 ASL Standards as a part of daily classroominstruction and schoolwide programming; develop and prepare lesson planscreate curriculum maps reports and keep records of student progress;ascertain learning needs of students and establish evaluation techniques forassessment of progress; collaborate with classroom teachers and ASL specialistsin development of IEP goals and objectives; provide leadership and expertise inthe area of ASL instruction; provide instruction in digital/media skillsrelevant to ASL instruction such as but not limited to digital cameras and tabletsincluding videotaping and videoediting software; coordinate schoolwideevents relevant to ASL/Deaf Culture and Deaf History and other school events;conduct schoolwide training on use of ASL Standards and alignment of ASLStandards with state standards; practice bilingual instructional strategies andconcepts with all students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelors degree in ASL instruction teacher certification or the ability to obtainsuch certification soon after hire is required.
Fluency in ASL and written English; knowledge ofthe Deaf Community and the ability to teach or work with students of differenteducational backgrounds and additional disabilities is required.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MastersDegree in ASL Education or equivalent; experience as a classroom teacher or ASLas a primary language (heritage language) teacher.
