Job Description Summary
The OConnell Lab at Chapman University in collaboration with the Kim (Chapman University) and Ryals (University of California Merced) Labs is soliciting applications for a paid summer undergraduate research assistant to contribute to field and lab research focused on determining whether how and to what extent heavy metals are impacting residential soils in and around the Eaton Fire zone in Southern California.
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be based at Chapman University with travel through the region for sampling trips coupled with sample analysis in the laboratory. This is an outstanding opportunity for a mentored experience in field and lab research that cuts across biogeochemistry soil science global change biology and public health.
Required Qualifications
Rising junior senior or recent graduate majoring in biological sciences environmental sciences and policy or a related field. Experience doing work outdoors with enthusiasm for carrying out physically demanding field research in all weather conditions. Demonstrated experience with basic scientific data collection and management. Interest or demonstrated experience in environmental science and public health. Strong communication skills. Attention to safety and organizational detail. Work effectively as a member of a team despite potentially stressful and difficult conditions. This may require problem solving on an interpersonal or group level as well as a willingness to accept differences. Valid U.S. drivers license.
