Job purpose
Under the direction of the Manager Social Planning and Research and Team Lead Social Researcher the Social Issues Researcher will be responsible for supporting social research activities in the Community Development department. The successful candidate will also work in collaboration with other agency departments to support any ongoing research activities.
The Social Issues Researcher will contribute to the work of the various projects that are underway in the Community Development department such as the Durham NonProfit Network North Durham Social Development Council Seniors Advisory Committee Settlement Workers in the Schools Survey Leadership Durham grant applications and agencywide data collection.
This position is funded through Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) which aims to provide quality summer employment opportunities for youth to develop skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition into the labour market.

Duties and responsibilities
- Work as a member of the Community Development Department supporting research activities of the agency department initiatives and projects as needed.
- Support the recruitment of survey respondents and survey administration for Leadership Durham.
- Conduct a search of the peerreviewed literature on child maltreatment and child maltreatment prevention for a grant application.
- Summarize findings from literature reviews.
- Contribute to the work of agencywide data collection initiatives.
- Review publicly available data sets and evaluate quality and relevance.
- Complete other teamrelated administrative tasks as required.
- Using a clientcentred antioppression antiracism traumainformed genderbased analysis plus and strengthbased approaches build relationships and establish rapport with clients and partners.
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy protection measures for all community partners vendors staff and clients.
- Promote a highfunctioning teamwork environment that is inclusive harmonious cooperative efficient and productive.
- Participate in promoting a positive workplace culture through agency committee membership and departmental activities.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Postsecondary degree in social research community development urban policy development and analysis or related field either completed or currently in progress.
- Understanding of community engagement social research and/or community development.
- Knowledge of the Durham Region and its municipalities as well as other in GTA.
- Current and uptodate knowledge of Durham social service providers and social laws.
- Knowledge of genderbased violence antioppression principles and traumainformed approaches.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Ability to present research findings clearly and concisely.
- Experience in writing research reports and academic papers.
- Strong understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
- Experience with data collection techniques such as surveys and interviews.
- Computer competency in wordprocessing communications programs use of the Internet for research and additional programs for statistical research and analysis.
- Enthusiasm for learning and professional development.
- Strong project management skills including the ability to prioritize tasks manage timelines and collaborate with crossfunctional teams.
- Previous internship or volunteer experience in a research setting is an asset.
