An Introduction to Glenstone Museum
Founded with the mission to seamlessly integrate art architecture and landscape Glenstone is an art museum located on over 300 acres of rolling hills and unspoiled woodland in Potomac Maryland. The museum opened in 2006 and expanded in 2018 offers nearly 60000 square feet of exhibition space to showcase its collection of more than 1300 works by 200 contemporary artists. With its expansion Glenstone now can welcome 100000 visitors each year and admission is always free.

Position Overview
The goal of the internship program at Glenstone is to cultivate the next generation of the workforce by exposing interns to various professional pathways in the museum world. In collaboration with their department interns can expect to gain professional experience by supporting specific departmental initiatives and projects. Interns are encouraged to connect with fellow team members throughout the organization to gain knowledge and build lasting relationships.
The Community Engagement (CENG) Department leads organizationwide strategic initiatives that enable Glenstone to be a community anchor to our local audiences. The department works with museumwide partners to enrich youth engagements and community collaborations through meaningful encounters with art architecture and nature.
The Community Engagement Intern will have the opportunity to support Glenstones Summer youth and community programs. These opportunities include:
  • Supporting the department and guide team in the last two weeks of the school visit season.
  • Planning and preparing for the new academic year by analyzing program feedback and developing material to support selfled visits.
  • Supporting Montgomery Countys Summer RISE program and working with high school students experiencing their first job in their field of interest.
  • Participating in the Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival the DMVs largest cultural celebration dedicated to honoring and uplifting historic Black communities in our region.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support CENG Coordinator in preparing and breaking down materials from school visits.
  • Support CENG Department in managing 10 Summer RISE students participating in experiences with Capital Projects Collections Communications Engineering & Maintenance Grounds IT and Security.
  • Support Glenstone table at Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival on Thursday June 19 2025. (The CENG Department will observe the Juneteenth holiday on June 20.)
  • Review and analyze school visit feedback from teachers and students over the 202425 school year and identify areas of improvement for 202525 year.
  • Attendance at allstaff meetings and weekly CENG Department meetings.
  • Attendance at all intern checkin meetings scheduled by the Learning & Development department.
Term
This is a 10week internship that starts Monday June 2 2025.
Work Schedule
Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. The Community Engagement Intern is expected to be onsite most days with the potential to work remotely on select Mondays and Fridays.

The Community Engagement Intern should have an interest in art architecture nature sustainability innovative technology and/or other focus areas important to the museum. Other attributes for success in this role include:

Required Skills & Experience
  • A selfstarter able to take direction run with a task ask good questions and enhance a project.
  • Willingness to collaborate with peers associates and work successfully both as an individual and as part of a team.
  • Experience working with youth audiences and/or teachers and schools.
  • Flexibility and a sense of humor will be crucial to adapt to schedule changes and unforeseeable circumstances that arise.
  • Strong intercultural competence communication planning and organizational skills.
  • Desire to learn and implement best practices including those unique to Glenstone.
  • Adaptability and adherence to Glenstones core values.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Reliable transportation to and from Potomac MD is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Genuine interest in art architecture and nature.
  • An ability to communicate in a second language preferably Spanish Mandarin French or American Sign Language (ASL) to engage with the diverse communities of Montgomery County.

Salary & Benefits
As part of our compensation philosophy at Glenstone all internships are paid. The hourly rate is commensurate with experience relative to whether the position is an undergraduate or graduate level experience.
