Job Description

The Custodian I provides custodial and support services for all OMSI facilities activities and events. Custodial staff serve to help ensure that OMSI provides a clean safe and healthy environment for all guests and staff.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Custodial Duties:
    • Performs general custodial services utilizing best practice for safety efficiency and environmental concerns;
    • Cleans and stocks restrooms on a daily basis ensuring proper sanitary conditions and good appearance;
    • Responsible for waste disposal throughout the OMSI campus including interior and exterior spaces;
    • Supports OMSI departments with general custodial services.

Working Conditions:

  • This position is nonexempt paid hourly;
  • This position is special project parttime scheduled for 20 29 hours/week;
    • This position is scheduled to work May 1 2025 August 31 2025;
    • Requires working onsite at the museum location;
    • Scheduled to work a five day work week; schedule expectations can be discussed with the Custodial Operations Leadership Team to provide flexibility and address museum needs;
    • Requires working on weekends holidays special events and/or evenings as scheduled.
  • Physical Demands: 5% sitting 75% standing 20% lifting/carrying/pushing 50 lbs.;
  • Vision Demands include:
    • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches of less)
    • Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point)
    • Depth and perception (three dimensional vision ability to judge distance and spatial relationships)
    • Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus)
    • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)
  • Environmental Demands include:
    • Wet or humid conditions (nonweather)
    • Extreme heat (nonweather)
    • Outdoor weather conditions
    • Work near moving mechanical parts
    • Work in high precarious places
    • Fumes or airborne particles
    • Toxic or caustic chemicals
    • Risk of electric shock
  • Noise Levels include:
    • Quiet (examples: library private office)
    • Moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers light traffic)
    • Loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department large earthmoving equipment)

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Assists with setup and teardown of OMSI events and assist with office moves;
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by Facilities management.

Knowledge and Skills:

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Business Practices:
    • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills;
    • Strong customer service and communication skills;
    • Ability to adhere to confidentiality protocol and community agreements;
    • Ability to pivot between individual and team work;
    • Ability to model and support a positive team dynamic with paid and unpaid staff.
  • Custodial Skills:
    • Working knowledge with operating and maintaining custodial tools;
    • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve custodialrelated issues;
    • Ability to learn and follow safety and protocol regulations.

PREFERENCES:

  • Proficient or native fluency in a second language (nonEnglish).

  • Prior custodialrelated experience.
