Description

Job Title: Assistant Professor of Nursing

Location: Lynchburg VA

Job Type: Fulltime benefits eligible

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Purpose: The successful candidate will provide onsite teaching in an undergraduate nursing program including classroom simulation and clinical environments. Teaching assignments may vary depending upon the needs of the nursing program but may include medicalsurgical nursing critical care nursing psychiatric nursing.

Specific job duties:

  • Assisting in academic advising of undergraduate nursing students
  • Assisting the nursing faculty team in curriculum design and evaluation
  • Planning and providing classroom and clinical instruction to facilitate student learning
  • Applying best practices to facilitate teaching and learning processes and principles with a commitment to continuous quality improvement
  • Participating in the Department of Nursing governance
  • Assessing and evaluating student progress toward attaining learning outcomes established for the courses and nursing program.
  • Documenting student learning interpreting outcomes and recording grades.
  • Assisting with student recruitment admission and retention.
  • Maintaining accurate and appropriate student instructor course simulation/clinical and program documentation.
  • Creating and maintaining effective collegial relationships with students faculty university and clinical agency staff and administration.
  • Modeling professional evidencebased nursing that is sensitive to diverse and multicultural considerations.
  • Establishing and maintaining professional and ethical boundaries with students coworkers and others in all learning environments.
  • Participating in University service and events.
  • Perform other responsibilities that may be assigned by the Department of Nursing Chair.

Schedule:

  • Must be available to meet the needs and assigned duties of the Department of Nursing. This may include evenings and occasional weekends to meet the needs of the department.

Experience/skills/physical demands

  • All applicants must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.

  • Ability to position and balance yourself.
  • Ability to move (including lift carry push and pull) up to 45 pounds or more.
  • Ability to perceive and respond to sounds and alarms.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to observe and monitor situations and details at close range in full and dimmed light.
  • Ability to move and/or stay in a stationary position in various settings for up to 12 hours at a time.
  • Ability to cope with stress while dealing with numerous students patients family members and other healthcare providers.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned MSN with specialization in nursing education from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • A current unencumbered license as a registered nurse or multistate licensure privilege to practice nursing in the state of Virginia at the time of hire.
  • Evidence of current experience in nursing practice (minimum of three years) and teaching sufficient to demonstrate professional competence.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the following nursing disciplines: fundamentals medicalsurgical mental health critical care or a combination thereof.
  • Evidence of continuing professional education and a commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Ability to engage in scholarly activity.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively engage with students and ensure excellence in instruction.
  • Ability to identify and apply assessment tools and/or methods to determine if learning outcomes were achieved.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (PhD DNP) in nursing
  • Certification as a nurse educator
  • Experience in clinical nursing
  • Experience in higher education teaching
  • Experience using patient care simulation software and highfidelity simulators
  • Knowledge of nursing accreditation
