The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking highly motivated and talented individuals for the positions of Recreation and Athletics Specialist 3 at the Monroe Correctional Complex (MCC) in Monroe WA. MCC is staffed 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Monroe Correctional Complex (MCC)is a 1500 bed male allcustody level facility located 30 miles northeast of Seattle. Employing approximately 1200 staff the complex consists of five major units; the Washington State Reformatory Unit (WSRU) Sky River Treatment Center (SRTC) a large mental health inpatient treatment unit Twin Rivers Unit (TRU) Intensive Management Unit (IMU) and the Minimum Security Unit (MSU). Services provided at MCC include custody and security classification educationincarcerated individualstreatments food service maintenance personnel recreation volunteer services religious services library services incarcerated individuals records visiting and extended family visiting.

Duties

Duties:
The Recreation and Athletics Specialist3 ensures the overall Recreation program meets the needs of both the facility and offender population.

At the Monroe Correctional ComplexWashington State Reformatory Unit this position will plan organize and direct a majority of all recreation activities to include gym yard weights intramural leagues photos and in cell activities. This position may have responsibility for other special events and/or family centered programs.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Plans organizes and directs a majority of all recreation at MCC including gym and yard intramural sports leagues and photos.
    Tasks include: Sets intramural league season dates days and times. Assigns coaches and sets season expectations. Hires and trains league officials. Trains and assigns offender photographer and establishes photo rules. Prints qualifying offender photos.
  • Manages the incell hobby / music program
    Tasks include: Inspect recreation equipment for necessary repairs. Work with maintenance department and outside vendors for equipment repair or replacement. Works with Tool Room Sgt. to update the tool inventory list check the tool cribs and work with officers to complete inventory accounting.
  • Responsible for recruitment screening placement and payment of offender work crew. Tasks include: Working with Facility Risk Management Team and utilizing the job referral list to hire train and evaluate offender workers.
  • Maintains accurate call outs and rosters for offender participants and responds to paper kites and CePrisons kiosk messages. Tasks include: Updating morning exercise class lists and setting the callout schedule. Ensuring there are no schedule conflicts with other programs. Respond in a timely manner to paper kites and Ceprison kiosk messages.
  • Maintains and accounts for all tools and ensures that proper training and safety precautions are complete.Tasks include:Works with Tool Room Sgt. to update the tool inventory list check the tool cribs and work with officers to complete inventory accounting.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
Required:
Working knowledge of several fields of recreational activities including specialized knowledge in at least two broad areas such as sports music social activities and or hobby crafts
Ability to plan organize and lead institution recreation programs; adapt recreation policies methods and techniques to specific operational situations
Supervise and train league officials fitness instructors photographers and other recreation related duties.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees
Establish and maintain effective records and reporting systems.
Understand and apply DOC policies and procedures relative to the program area and specific job duties

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
A Bachelors degree involving major study in either (a) recreation or therapeutic recreation (b) music drama or physical education or (c) psychology sociology or education with a minor in recreation physical education music or drama and two years of paid professional recreation experience.
OR
One year of experience as a Recreation Specialist 2.
AND
Knowledge of:
1. Principles of supervision in group and individual therapeutic recreation and general recreational activities
2. Techniques of observing offenders and making oral and written reports
3. Training techniques humanities and behavioral sciences.

  • Must be able to work in spaces climb stairs walk long distances and frequently lift up to 30 pounds. Under rare circumstances this position may be required to lift or carry up to 50 pounds and push up to 100 pounds.
