This summer student opportunity is available within the Good Shepherd Barrett Centre


About the Role:

The Barrett Centre provides crisis intervention supports to all those aged 16 of any gender identity. The program provides services including 16 shortterm respite beds inperson and telephone support information and referral; crisis assessment counseling and support; symptom stabilization for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. All services are supported by a diverse team of staff including Peer Support Harm Reduction and various community partners in addition to the Mental Health Crisis Workers. Barrett Centre is committed to the promotion of AntiRacism/AntiOppression and Harm Reduction based practices in all the services provided.


How You Will Make an Impact:

  • Conduct risk and suicide assessments in a compassionate hospitable and nonjudgmental manner
  • Provide immediate crisis intervention and utilize deescalation strategies
  • Offer crisis counseling and oneonone emotional support
  • Facilitate appropriate linkages to services and make referrals to community resources
  • Advocate on behalf of clients to ensure access to needed supports
  • Collaborate and coordinate care with other service providers
  • Deliver all services via the 24hour Crisis Phone Line

What Youll Bring to Our Team

  • Post Secondary education or working towards Post Secondary education in Social Services Crisis Management Addictions etc.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of child/youth development
  • Excellent communication team building negotiating and problemsolving skills
  • Fluency in French and/or a language in addition to English is an asset
  • CPR Training or willingness to be certified is an asset.
  • Hospitable in dealings with clients/public / volunteers / staff and other key stakeholders.
  • Available and responsive to the needs of others demonstrating a respectful and compassionate demeanor
  • Observe all Good Shepherd health and safety rules.

Hiring Criteria the following criteria is established by Canada Summer Job:

This temporary fulltime position is funded by Service Canada for youth between the ages of 15 to 30 years of age.

  • Applicants may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as they were 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • As per the Summer Canada Jobs Program criteria:
    • International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen permanent resident or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
    • Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
