Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The position of Classified Nurse is done for the purpose/s ofproviding care as outlined in Individual Healthcare Plans created by certificated school nurses administering medications to students per health care provider orders maintaining student health records including immunizations assessing the health needs of students to provide first aid or referrals escorting medically fragile students with BSD transportation to and from school and on school day field trips diabetic care with the administration of insulin and other emergency medication completing vision and hearing screenings and assisting in any licensed nursing procedures as directed by certificated school nurse. The Classified Nurse provides nursing care under the direction and supervision of BSD Director of Special Education Health Services. Other responsibilities include maintaining computer records and lists securing required health records from parents inputting health data to district information system as required.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

  • Provides nursing care as delegated by Director of Special Education Health Services and/or School Nurse as outlined in Individual Healthcare Plans created by certificated nurse. Nursing care may include nonoral medications (i.e. injections eye/ear/nasal medications) mixing medications blood glucose monitoring nasogastric and Jtube feedings suctioning and tracheotomy care feeding and medication by Gtube performing clean intermittent catheterization providing nebulizer treatments and other nursing care appropriate per nurse licensure and nurse practice act. Individual Healthcare Plans are developed and monitored by the certificated school nurse.
  • Administers medication to students as directed by prescribing health care provider according to district policy and procedures.
  • Attends to student health needs; assesses injuries or illness to determine appropriate action; provides basic first aid; refers students to health care professionals as needed. Determines need for certificated nurses advice; calls certificated nurse for assistance as necessary; may call for emergency assistance. Calls parents regarding student accidents or illness as needed.
  • Maintains student health records; creates new records; updates health information; ensures that health records are maintained in confidential manner.
  • Gathers assesses and records immunization information; gathers health data for a variety of state reports such as immunization vision and hearing. Assists with state mandated vision and hearing screenings. Contacts parents or health centers as needed to secure health records and immunization compliance utilizing state information system in accordance with district procedures and timelines. Maintains documentation of parental contacts in appropriate manner. Prepares forms for reporting purposes.
  • Compiles health records as needed while maintaining student confidentiality. Maintains health room log using current information system. Completes accident and health incident reports and distributes them appropriately. Compiles updates and distributes health concerns and health alerts lists as needed to staff.
  • Reports situations such substance abuse or physical abuse to appropriate departmental/administrative staff for followup. Maintains confidentiality of student information at all times.
  • Works as a member of the health services team to develop staffing plans and implement programs and services for children and families.
  • Provides feedback to the certificated school nurse to assure appropriate health care plans and records for the purpose of providing information required by legal and professional standards.
  • May have flexible hours to allow employee to participate in family or community activities related to this program such as field trips.
  • Care as outlined in Individual Healthcare Plan for medically fragile students while riding district transportation to and from school as well as providing nursing care and escort for field trips when needed.
  • May in conjunction with departmental staff provide information to parents.
  • May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams. Models appropriate and cooperative behavior including protecting confidential information consistent with district ethical guidelines.
  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as needed.
  • May requireriding the bus to and from school with a student daily. When the student is absent other work will be assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports directly to and is supervised by the Director of Special Education Health Services.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):

Required:

  • Associate RN Degree Program
  • Current Washington State RN license required.
  • BLS CPR/First Aid Certification

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in public health and/or pediatrics strongly preferred.

KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):

  • Demonstrated ability to keep accurate records

  • Familiarity with medical terminology and basic medical procedures
  • Keyboarding skill

  • Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policy district and legal requirements
  • Meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Must deal with a wide range of student health problems and crises both in person and via telephone triage.
  • Work is subject to varied types of emergencies as well as frequent interruptions.
  • May need to deal with injured angry and/or distraught individuals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting finger dexterity grasping talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions. This position may be exposed to prolonged exposure to visual display terminals as required.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts odors chemicals extreme temperatures inadequate lighting workspace restrictions and intense noises.

Work is typically performed at school sites including the health room office classroom playground school grounds and general school environment.

May be required to travel between school sites and shift priorities as they arise.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

AISP pay range G $ 37.87 to $ 39.82 (starting rate is $ 37.87/hour) based on negotiated collective bargaining 40 hours per week for a 192day annual assignment . This position is covered by a collective bargaining dental vision longterm disability and lifeinsurance eligibility is based upon 630 hours worked within a school year. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.
