Position Summary
The successful Candidate will provide technical leadership and expertise in the dynamic area of PreAnalytics and Specimen Management. Work closely with Management Quality Specialists and Medical Scientific staff to oversee daytoday technical operations and participate in continuous improvement of department processes.
The division of Specimen Management specializes in specimen procurement and processing for all UHN sites. As a valued member of TeamLMP you will play a key role in providing high quality preanalytical services to clinical laboratory and research professionals.
Duties
- Serve as a technical resource for the core lab Specimen Management area.
- Monitor work flow; ensure equitable distribution of workload; recommend and participate in the implementation of new methods and improvements to the flow of work; collaborate in the establishment of priorities to achieve the expected turnaround times for tests.
- Update and maintain Specimen Management procedures
- Oversee preanalytic specimen flow and contribute to continuous process improvement
- Investigate and troubleshoot problems originating and/or related to preanalytic stage
- Collaborate and liaise with LMP analytic teams to maintain seamless specimen flow between departments
- Ensure preanalytic processes are effective to maintain required specimen integrity and testing requirements.
- Assess technical performance at the bench
- Troubleshoot and resolves minor routine staff problems within scope of authority
- Maintain the Quality Control system including evaluation and validation. Reviews and signs internal/external quality control documentation as assigned; follows up on discrepancies in quality control testing and/or calibration reported
- Monitor the inventory management system to ensure the efficient utilization and distribution of laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Oversee equipment maintenance validation and adherence of equipment related policies
- Train new staff and maintain training records related to the department
- Ensure adequate staff coverage during breaks; perform schedule adjustments for the area within scope of authority.
- Maintain safe working environment and comply with IPAC
- Attend participate and facilitate discussions at appropriate departmental meetings as required.
- Participate in professional development teaching/education activities safety and quality improvement programs to ensure excellence in the provision of services
Qualifications :
- Three 3 years recent laboratory experience
- Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist program required
- Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (CMLTO) required
- Demonstrates ability to develop skill and knowledge in all areas of the laboratory (onthejob experience)
- thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of laboratory procedures instruments equipment and special techniques (onthejob experience) in assigned area
- Excellent problem recognition and problem solvingskills
- Knowledge of Quality Assurance principles
- Effective time management skills; ability to organize work and set priorities
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Computer literacy
- Ability to work effectively as a leader and/or team member
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fastpaced environment
- Ability to work accurately under stressful conditions
- Knowledge of applicable Hospital and departmental policies procedures guidelines protocols and practices
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education
- Ability to coach technical staff
