Base Salary from level B $122830 $superannuation
About the opportunity
The successful candidate will join the Translational Neuroimmunology group led by Associate Professor Sudarshini Ramanathan. This research group is affiliated with Sydney Medical School the Faculty of Medicine and Health University of Sydney across the Kids Neuroscience Centre Childrens Hospital at Westmead and the ANZAC Research Institute Concord Campus.
The successful candidate will be a lead scientist providing immunology and molecular biology expertise to a multidisciplinary team; and will take a key role in executing projects evaluating the immunobiology underlying autoimmune diseases of the nervous system. The candidate should have a strong background in immunology and molecular biology with core competencies detailed below. Data generated from scientific experiments will be analysed in the context of clinical data with a translational aspect to all research outputs from our group.
Research Responsibilities:
design and execute laboratory experiments for specific research projects under the supervision of the Translational Neuroimmunology Group Head
high competency in tissue culture based experiments using cell lines. This will involve maintenance of cell stocks culturing of cells for transfection of expression constructs for downstream functional studies and protein analysis
high competency in flow cytometry experiments and analysis
high competency in microscopy
high competency in molecular biology techniques including subcloning of DNA plasmids sequencing PCR and restriction enzyme digestions and generation of monoclonal antibodies
high competency in the analysis and graphing of research data (including expertise in GraphPad Prism Adobe Illustrator R studio etc)
competency in lymphocyte culture
competency in B cell immunology
competency and experience of analysing singlecell datasets including RNAseq and immunoglobulin sequences is desirable
competency in neuroscience including dissection for and propagation of murine neuronal cell cultures is desirable
competency in performing and analysing tissue immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting is desirable
planning and of biological sample preparation and storage database construction and management
identify and troubleshoot technical or scientific problems working collaboratively with other scientists and clinicians as required
provide assistance to on going study coordination under the supervision of the group Head
this position requires meticulous care and handing of rare patient samples and the applicant must demonstrate a high level of responsibility and reliability
Training and Development
present experimental results and workinprogress in laboratory and institute meetings as well as national and international conferences
form the basis of existing and new collaborations with clinicians and scientists locally nationally and internationally; with intellectual and practical input to projects
contribute to the design data acquisition and analysis and writing of highquality research project grants and research publications
continuously improve scientific knowledge and technical skills
train mentor and cosupervise new team members and students within the Translational Neuroimmunology Group
ensure effective communication and liaison within the research program which includes the project team and collaborators especially at the clinical laboratory interface.
conduct original research independently or as part of a team focusing on publication conference presentations and securing research funding
maintain a research profile including publication of book chapters peerreviewed journal articles conference and/or seminar papers
develop research collaborations and engage in translational research that result in knowledge or technology transfer leading to commercialisation improved policy or practice or enhancement to industry the profession or community
maintain quality standards and excellence in research activities and output
provide informal mentoring and guidance to lowerlevel academics and supervise postgraduate research students or projects where appropriate
undertake other duties appropriate within the classification level as required.
Administration
assist with governance and ethics requirements
participate in ordering consumables and other laboratory duties essential to the efficient running of the team as requested by the group Head
participate in weekly meetings with the group Head
comply with OH&S requirements and other institutional policies
About you
doctorate or PhD in a relevant field
background in basic science research with a focus on autoimmune neurology
proven experience in the development of live cell based assays complement mediated cytotoxicity functional assays cytokine and chemokine evaluation and processing of peripheral blood mononuclear cells
proven experience conducting original research and engaging in scholarly activity
a developing network of academic industry and professional partners and stakeholders
a developing research profile
proven experience supervising and mentoring others
experience in teaching and learning as evidenced by participation in team teaching and teaching in a variety of settings.
