Southern Companys Schatz Grid Visualization and Analytics Center (SGVAC) is seeking a Power Systems Research Engineer to support innovation and technical evaluation in the areas of grid operations power system modeling real-time simulation and data analytics. This role plays a key part in deploying and validating cutting-edge tools and technologies that enhance Transmission and Distribution situational awareness decision support and control center capabilities.
The position supports the Grid Operations and Planning research domain and will involve hands-on simulation data analysis and visualization projects. It will also support integrated technologies such as Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS) Distribution Management Systems (DMS) and cybersecurity evaluation platforms.
Key Responsibilities:Design execute and document research and technology assessment plans.
Perform advanced power system modeling and simulation using tools such as RTDS PSCAD PSS/E and ETAP.
Analyze and visualize large-scale grid data to support operations and planning.
Evaluate situational awareness tools next-gen control center technologies and DERMS platforms.
Support hardware-in-the-loop testing for Transmission/Distribution grid simulations.
Work across disciplines to integrate operational platforms and data sources.
Develop programming tools and scripts (Python SQL C# etc.) to support research deliverables.
Communicate technical findings clearly through reports presentations and team collaboration.
Manage multiple concurrent projects with minimal supervision.
Participate in internal and external stakeholder meetings and maintain strong collaborative relationships.
Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (required)
Specialization in Power Systems strongly preferred.
Proficiency in power system modeling and simulation tools such as RTDS PSCAD PSS/E or ETAP (required).
Experience or training in data science and data analytics is a plus.
Programming skills in Python SQL C# or equivalent (preferred).
Familiarity with DMS DERMS and cybersecurity in utility environments is desirable.
Strong technical problem-solving and analytical thinking capabilities.
Ability to manage time and tasks independently while coordinating with project stakeholders.
Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
Clear and effective communication skills both verbal and written.
Collaborative mindset with a strong sense of initiative and ownership.
Comfortable navigating hybrid work schedules and occasional travel (minimal overnight travel required).
