About JMU:

Located in the heart of Virginias beautiful Shenandoah Valley the city of Harrisonburg is approximately 120 miles from Washington D.C. and Richmond VA. The student body includes approximately 20000 undergraduate and 1900 graduate students with over 1000 fulltime instructional faculty.

General Information:

The University Career Center is seeking a motivated and detailoriented graduate assistant to support the development marketing promotion and coordination of workbased learning experiences (WBLE) for undergraduate students.

This is a new role within a newly established office focused on expanding experiential learning initiatives offering the graduate assistant a unique opportunity to contribute to the development and growth of workbased learning programs from the ground up.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Conduct research on JMU alumni and employers about their career paths by gathering and organizing data and information

Support outreach and marketing to students employers faculty and campus partners to identify and promote Work Based Learning Experiences.

Help track participation and outcomes in WBLE programs using career services platforms or databases.

Help design and facilitate tabling events workshops info sessions and resource materials related to Work Based Learning Experiences

Support the University Career Center at events such as Career Fairs and other UCC programs

Conduct phone calls to recent graduates to identify first destination career outcomes

Conduct research and assessment into WBLE best practices ie turning Federal Work Study positions into WBLE

Provide support for special projects and initiatives related to experiential learning.

Qualifications:

Must be a fulltime graduate student at JMU for the 2025/2026 academic year.

Interest in experiential learning workforce development or career services.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Detailoriented with strong organizational and time management abilities.

Comfortable working with multiple stakeholders

Experience with event planning marketing or data tracking is a plus.

Familiarity with platforms like Excel Handshake 12Twenty or similar is a bonus.

Conditions of Employment:

Students may apply to a graduate assistantship prior to being accepted into a graduate program. However to be eligible to receive an assistantship upon entry into a graduate program the following criteria must be met:

The student must be conditionally or unconditionally accepted into a graduate program. Students who are provisionally accepted will not be eligible until they achieve conditional or unconditional acceptance into their program.

The students must have an official transcript on file indicating completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution or agency

After receiving an assistantship the student must maintain at least a 3.0 graduate GPA in order to retain or reapply for the assistantship.

These are minimum criteria. Graduate program coordinators have the right to impose additional criteria if they see fit.
