Job Description
Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge technical proficiency and problem solving in transfusion medicine. Assists in the supervision of Blood Bank operations and performs diagnostic procedures. Supervises all aspects of blood component preparation storage and delivery. Types blood performs antibody supports transfusion therapy and helps decide aspects of transfusion policy. Investigates and assists the pathologist with interpretation when an adverse reaction to transfusion occurs. Prepares blood into components for specialized use and provides information to medical staff on use of specialized blood components and products. These job responsibilities are consistent with those of general supervisor and testing personnel as defined in the CLIA regulations.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee quality control compliance with laws standards and accreditation requirements.
- Perform diagnostic tests and procedures.
- Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment.
- Assist in the evaluation of new tests equipment and procedures.
- Provide staff orientation and training.
Requirements:
- Master or bachelors degree in a chemical physical biological clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution.
- Current registration or eligible for registration as a Medical Technologist (ASCP) or equivalent. SBB Specialty is desirable.
- At least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that at a minimum include: 24 hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry 6 semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry biology or medical laboratory.
- Four years of recent experience in a highly complex clinical laboratory including at least one year working in Blood Bank.
- Completion of an approved clinical laboratory training program accredited by ABHES CAHEA or other organization approved by HHS (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above).
