Histotechnician

Education:

Associates or Bachelors degree in Biology Chemistry or related field preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification required.

Experience:

One year of experience preferred.

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

1. Log specimens on computer system/copath retrieve surgical numbers and charge for procedures performed.

1. Assist pathologists with surgical specimens and other related duties.

1. Process surgical autopsy and research material.

1. Program and operate automated tissue processors and evaluate problems.

1. Histology Microtomy including; embedding specimens in paraffin and sectioning specimens using manual and automated microtomes.

1. Operate and perform duties associated with departmental instrumentation such as: automated stainer and coverslipper.

1. Prepare and complete special stains and IHC stains required by pathologists.

1. Assist pathologists with preparation of frozen sections including operating cryostats.

1. File and retrieve specimens slides and paraffin blocks.

1. Rotate oncall duties as required.

1. Assist with the instruction of new employees.

1. Assist and prepare for laboratory inspections.

1. Provide general maintenance and cleanliness of equipment.

1. Order supplies for the department.

1. Perform special laboratory methods such as: neuropathology techniques immunohistochemical techniques muscle biopsies renal biopsies lymphoma workups decal procedures bone marrow processing/AZF and microwave techniques.

1. Identify and define terminology principles reactions and results of special laboratory procedures.

1. Interpret reactions results and protocols to assess validity and check for common or unusual problems.

1. Make recommendations to improve procedures in regard to efficiency and safety.

1. Identify normal tissues grossly and microscopically.

1. Prepare sections for immunofluorescent studies and assist other departments with histotechnologic expertise as required.

1. Perform other tasks as determined by the director administrative staff supervisor or other personnel in order to maintain primary departmental functions.

1. Promote guest relations at all times.

1. Performs other related work as required or requested.
