Chronicle Books is seeking a detailoriented solutionsdriven Contracts Manager to support our editorial teams. This role reports to the Director of Contracts and is responsible for drafting and negotiating publishing agreements reviewing thirdparty contracts and ensuring compliance with company standards and legal requirements. The Contracts Manager will also manage contract templates rights reversion letters copyright registrations and entry of contract terms into our royalty system. This is an exciting opportunity for a publishing professional with a strong background in contracts intellectual property and rights management.


Key Responsibilities

  • Draft author illustrator and license agreements for acquired properties
  • Review and comment on thirdparty agreements to ensure alignment with company policy
  • Maintain and update boilerplate agreements to reflect procedural or legal changes
  • Negotiate contractual terms with authors agents and licensors
  • Submit copyright registrations for titles through the U.S. Copyright Office
  • Draft and administer rights reversion letters
  • Input contract deal terms into the publishers royalty system
  • Respond to or route internal inquiries regarding contract terms digital/audio rights and related issues

Hiring Salary Range: $68000 $78200 per year. This range represents the anticipated low and high end of the expected salary for this position and will be determined by factors including but not limited to: applicants education experience knowledge skills and abilities and geographic location as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. This position is also eligible for our profit share plan.


Schedule: Employees at Chronicle Books follow a flexible hybrid schedule of working a minimum of 3 days per week and up to 5 days per week in our San Francisco office depending on project and business needs. Please note that this job description is not designed to cover all the activities required of the employee.

Requirements
  • 46 years of experience with contracts including negotiation and drafting
  • Familiarity with intellectual property law including copyright and trademark
  • Experience in licensing agreements strongly preferred
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines independently and collaboratively
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
