The Facility Maintenance Technician will coordinate and perform routine maintenance preventative maintenance and
emergency repair work of the University Student Commons Hunton Student Center and Event Spaces at Jonah L.
Larrick Student Center including light carpentry electrical and plumbing work. This position is also responsible for
assisting with facility renovation project management inventory management and working with VCU Facilities
Management and vendors to provide safe and wellmaintained facilities. This position reports to the Associate Director of
Facilities Operations and Event Services.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Facility Maintenance: 60
Perform routine electrical plumbing and carpentry work ensuring University Student Commons facilities meet
department standards in a costeffective manner.
Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure that University Student Commons equipment
continues to run smoothly.
Assemble and set up machinery or equipment.
Fix and/or paint roofs windows doors floors woodwork walls and other parts of the University Student
Commons Facilities as necessary.
Submit work orders to VCU Facilities Maintenance as needed ensuring work is completed in a timely manner.
Coordinate work to be performed by external vendors and University partners to perform repair work as needed
ensuring quality work is completed in a timely manner and in compliance with university guidelines.
Maintain maintenance requests work logs (preventative regular and emergency repair work) equipment
specifications and warranty information.
Provide regular communication with internal and external customers regarding work that will impact
operations.

Fiscal/Inventory Management: 15
Assist with the development and management of annual facility maintenance budgets.
Provide responsible and ethical management of resources within designated program area(s) including
developing managing and reconciling program budgets.
Identifies needs for supplies materials tools equipment and repair parts.
Assist with coordinating surplus of University Student Commons property as needed according to established
university guidelines.
Maintains appropriate inventory to ensure timely repairs.
Maintains all tools equipment and work areas in a safe and orderly manner.

Project Management 10
Assist in identifying renovation and improvement projects that support sustainable innovative and adaptable
spaces.
Assist in the development of project scope and specifications and identifying potential products and vendors.
Work with VCU Construction Management to manage largescale projects.
Provide effective communication to internal Student Commons customers regarding project specifications
timelines budgets and project status.

General Administration: 10
Attend and actively participate in staff meetings inservice education sessions and other divisional or
departmental meetings.
Create revise and implement standard operating procedures related to facility maintenance.
Participate in other Division of Student Affairs initiatives programs and committees as required. Collaborate
with other university departments in support of the universitys academic mission.
Assist in the overall operation of the department by providing input and completing assigned projects annual
goals and objectives and annual reports.
Maintain professional skill sets and certifications as appropriate for job responsibilities and as a professional.
Investigate new and emerging trends and explore opportunities for growth as it relates to areas of responsibility.
Serve as part of the onsite management team providing assistance to the facility operations team as needed.

Risk Management: 5
Assist in providing an effective safety/risk management plan for facility maintenance that includes regular safety
reviews chemical handling procedures emergency procedure development and appropriate documentation.
Assist in conducting regular safety inspections of all facilities and equipment maintaining appropriate
documentation for risk management and supervisors review.
Obtain appropriate training to ensure proper handling of chemicals power tools and maintenance for facility
systems.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Facilities Operations and Event Services.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

High School graduate or equivalent.
Valid Virginia drivers license with ability to obtain VCU driving privileges (no major infractions or less than 2
minor violations within the last 3 years)
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty staff and student environment or
commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Knowledge of preventative maintenance regular maintenance and repair services necessary to maintain safe and
proper operation of recreational facilities.
Basic knowledge of plumbing electrical carpentry and HVAC
Ability to take initiative problem solve and meet deadlines
Excellent written and oral communication skills interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively
Experience and skills in operating computers.
Ability to lift and handle deliveries and materials as needed.
Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly climb ladders work in a variety of environmental conditions and
move safely over uneven terrain.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience installing maintaining diagnosing and repairing mechanical equipment.
Experience working in a university/college union setting.
CPR/AED/First Aid Certified.
Ability to function independently and as a member of a team in a constantly changing environment.
Other requirements:
Position involves working occasional oncall hours evenings and weekends.
Position is located in a nonsmoking work area.

POSITION: This position is a fulltime twelvemonth nonexempt position.

SALARY: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Position includes full University & Academic Professional benefits package including health insurance tuition waiver and paid leave.
