The University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is seeking a full time Ophthalmic Technician 2 (OT2 for the Laser Vision Center in Palm Beach Gardens Florida.
The Laser Vision Correction Ophthalmic Technician will assist the Optometrists and Ophthalmologists by conducting all Laser Vision evaluations and assisting in Laser surgery. The incumbent will possess skills of a minor OR technician performing with a high degree of excellence for quality and proficiency. This position performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care.
Provides patientcentric care.
Adheres to University of Miami policies standards values and required training.
Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
Follows best practices of patient safety hand hygiene and infection control.
Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.
Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy timeliness professionalism and thoroughness.
Meets daily productivity goals.
Maintains JCAHPO certifications.
Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order.
Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.
Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.
Works evenings and weekends as needed.
Performs organizational duties as assigned.
Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients.
Facilitates motility exams.
Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams.
Performs imaging including but not limited to fundus photos OCTs and Slit Lamp exams.
Assists with training and onboarding clinical support staff.
Acts as a superuser for technology implementations optimizations and training initiatives.
Acts as preceptor and trainer for team members.
Serves as a lead technician providing oversight to clinical teams when assigned.
Performs and documents the following items in the electronic medical record.
Reason for visit Tangent screen visual fields Chief complaint
Basic ocular motility History of present illness Pupillary evaluation
Basic review of systems Ocular surface assessment Review systemic and ocular medications
Eye drop administration Record allergies Intraocular pressure such as Goldman TonoPen and ICare
Pharmacy information Pachymetry Family social medical and ocular history
Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses Visual acuity at distance and near
Color vision test Lensometry Stereopsis test Manual refraction
Sensorimotor exam Confrontational fields Automated & manual perimetry
Humphrey visual fields Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields Amsler Grid visual fields

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent
Certification and Licensing:
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
Experience:
2 years of relevant experience

Prepares patients for intravitreal injections.
Ability to function as an ophthalmic scribe.
Assists physician with minor procedures to include patient identification site confirmation preparation instrumentation and sterile technique.
Educates patients regarding administration of ocular medications and preop/postop instructions as directed by a physician.
Proficient in Microsoft Office.
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
Clinical:
Preforms all refractive evaluations including:
Documenting patients medical history
Test patients visual acuity
Depth perception
Color perception
Conduct a Retinoscopy Refraction manifest and cycloplegic
Perform tonometry and slit lamp assessments
Measures intraocular pressure of eyes
Measures axial length of eye using ultrasound equipment
Performs other tests and measurements as requested by physician i.e. PAM Topography
Applies drops to anesthetize dilate or medicate eyes
Educate patient on refractive procedures
Collaborates on refractive clinical flow with administrative team and providers
Surgical:
Educate patients on pre and postoperative instructions
Conduct pre and post op vitals
Preform specialized imaging tests for patients
Prep patients for surgery while
Order and maintain clinical supplies
Assist in all laser procedures elective and medically necessary
Activation and deactivation of all Lasers on J&J and Alcon platforms
Identify proper key cards to be used with different procedures and documents use
Identify and solve any problems by troubleshooting all laser equipment
Perform fluency test and calibration assessment daily to assure surgical parameters and proper laser function
Conduct sterilization of laser room equipment and instruments
Input all patient data into laser system and ensure proper
Monitor gas supply and change tanks when necessary
Order and Maintain OR supplies and medications
Document procedures in logbook
Preps surgical charts and nomographs for Providers
Education:
