HOURLY RATE: $16.50
NOTE: This position is limited to full time UCSB students.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department is currently accepting applications for the position ofUCSB Student Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)Extra Help.

This exciting position is a great opportunity to get hands on experience in the emergency medical field! We are looking for students available to start in late September and who can work through the academic year. Students can expect to work up to 40 hours per week including one 24hour shift and will be compensated $16.50 per hour for time worked.

Civil Service Rule 905. Extra Help Appointment.
This position is Extra Help and is governed by Civil Service Rule 905. An Extra Help appointment is defined as an appointment made to a nonregular nonpermanent position established on a temporary basis to meet peak loads unusual work situations seasonal and recurrent work intermittent assignments or emergencies. Such appointment except emergency appointment shall not exceed one thousand forty hours in the twelvemonth period immediately following the first day of the first appointment of the incumbent unless extended by prior approval of the Civil Service Commission.

Examples of Duties

Students will work alongside the Santa Barbara County Fire personnel at Station 17 (located on the UCSB campus) while responding to emergencies performing basic EMT functions and other duties as directed by Santa Barbara County Fire.

Employment Standards

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
At the time of hire (anticipated hire date: September 30 2025 applicants must:

  1. Be a current UCSB student with at least one academic year left before graduation and
  2. have the ability to work throughout the academic year and
  3. enrolled as a UCSB student the entire academic year and
  4. possess a valid CAEMT Certification prior to beginning of 202526 academic year and maintain a current CAEMT Certification during the entire academic year (NREMT National Registry EMT certifications are not eligible in lieu of a CAEMT certification)and
  5. possess and maintain a valid CPR card during the entire academic year.
Attach a copy of your UCSB Student ID when available. Attach a copy of your valid CAEMT License and valid CPR card to your application when available. All required documentation must be submittedprior to the start of the 2025/2026 Academic year.

Each application will be screened for qualifications and the most qualified candidates will be invited to an interview.

This is an ExtraHelp position and is atwill. You will receive 40 hours of sick leave post your 90th day of employment. Unused sick leave balances are not compensable at separation.
