Overview
The Import & Export Manager plays a critical role in ensuring that the organizations supply chain operates smoothly and efficiently. This position is responsible for overseeing the transportation logistics and regulatory compliance of goods being imported and exported. A successful Import & Export Manager will possess a deep understanding of international trade laws and regulations as well as strong negotiation and analytical skills. This role not only contributes directly to the bottom line of the organization by optimizing costs associated with global logistics but also enhances the companys competitive edge in the market. By managing relationships with shipping companies customs agents and government agencies the Import & Export Manager ensures that all shipments are timely and meet all legal requirements. Additionally this position often involves collaborating with various departments within the organization such as finance sales and inventory management to align on strategies that support overall business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the import and export processes to ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements
- Develop and implement logistics strategies to optimize transport costs and delivery times
- Negotiate contracts with shipping and freight companies to secure favorable terms
- Coordinate with customs brokers and government agencies regarding documentation and regulatory requirements
- Monitor shipment progress and resolve any issues that may arise during transportation
- Coordinate with internal departments to forecast inventory needs based on shipment schedules
- Analyze and report on supply chain performance metrics to identify areas for improvement
- Identify potential risks in the supply chain and develop mitigation strategies
- Provide training and guidance to staff on best practices in import and export operations
- Maintain thorough documentation for all import/export transactions for audit purposes
- Stay updated on changes in trade regulations and compliance requirements
- Prepare and manage budgets for shipping and logistics operations
- Lead negotiations regarding tariffs and freight charges to enhance profitability
- Establish and maintain relationships with international vendors and clients
- Conduct market research to identify trends in international trade
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Business International Trade Logistics or related field
- 5 years of experience in import/export management or logistics
- Comprehensive knowledge of international shipping processes and customs regulations
- Strong understanding of freight forwarding and transportation management
- Proficiency in using logistics management software and tools
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Demonstrated negotiation ability with vendors and shipping agencies
- Strong analytical skills to assess logistics performance
- Able to work collaboratively and lead crossfunctional teams
- Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Familiarity with various trade agreements and compliance regulations
- Ability to travel internationally as required
- Experience with budget management and cost control
- Certification in logistics or supply chain management is a plus
- Fluency in a second language is an advantage
- Proven track record of successful import/export operations management
