Job Title: Senior Manager of MuseumLab


Classification: FullTime Exempt


Compensation: $48000.00 per year

Position Summary:

The Senior Manager of MuseumLab will lead innovative and inclusive programming for a wide range of audiences and ages at MuseumLab including targeted programs that reach middle and high school aged youth as well as experiences for adults families educators and the creative community in Pittsburgh. The facility includes exhibit and program spaces designed to support learning in a wide array of artistic disciplines including woodworking metalworking digital production photography printmaking performance fiber arts design and more. This position will serve as an important liaison across departments and teams linking education creative experiences special events and visitor services to provide exceptional guest experiences that embody the Museums mission and vision.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Museum Educators Specialists Teaching Artists Interns

Essential Job Functions:

  • Oversee the development and delivery of innovative and inclusive programming events and experiences which incorporate the museum values of kindness joy creativity and curiosity and are supported by researchbased practices.
  • Develop and oversee targeted programs and learning experiences that provide a spectrum of engagement and growth opportunities for middle and high school aged youth including field trips workshops youth nights intensive courses internships youth residencies and more.
  • Curate and maintain learning spaces that are welcoming inspiring safe and accessible to support creativity and communitybuilding across diverse audiences.
  • Supervise and support staff teaching artists and partners who lead programming at MuseumLab.
  • Nurture intergenerational collaboration and mentorship opportunities that connect young learners to practitioners in diverse creative fields in partnership with the Creative Experiences team.
  • Collaborate with the Creative Experiences and Education Departments to activate exhibits as energetic and innovative playful learning spaces while remaining responsive to partner visitor and community needs and interests.
  • Implement audience recruitment and retention strategies to develop longterm engagement and growth opportunities for youth.
  • Collaborate with the Creative Experiences team to support art making media performance and social connection programs for adult learners and creatives at MuseumLab.
  • Collaborate with the JEDAI and Community Engagement team to host programs events and partnerships that are accessible inclusive and culturally relevant.
  • Maintain expand and build upon established and strategic MuseumLab partnerships including Manchester Academic Charter School our onsite academic partner.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications team to promote programs and other offerings at MuseumLab increasing attendance awareness and engagement.
  • Collaborate with the Advancement department to obtain grant funding sponsorships and other forms of financial support for programming at MuseumLab.
  • Serve as an administrative lead for programming at MuseumLab by managing budgets staffing schedules and space and supply use to ensure orderly operations.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in programmatic ideation sessions as part of a collaborative team.
  • Work with the Museums Research team on evaluation reflection and professional development activities.
  • Foster a community valuing creativity and amplifying youth voice.
  • Promote accessibility and inclusion by incorporating universal design principles into programming and space use.
  • Assist in the inventory and control of supplies and equipment for MuseumLab programming.
  • Work with the public across other exhibit spaces within the Museum campus.

Job Qualifications:

Education:

Documentable education or work experience in an appropriate related field (outofschool time youth experience informal education etc) required. Bachelors degree preferred. Substitution of years of experience may be considered equivalent to formal educational training.

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience working with youth in formal and/or informal learning environments.
  • Experience working with or familiarity with artists tools and processes that may include but are not limited to: woodworking digital art metalworking fiber etc.
  • Strong administrative experience (e.g. record keeping scheduling budgeting project management) required.
  • Prior supervisory and leadership experience preferred.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication time management and organization skills.
  • Willingness to grow learn and adapt.
  • Leadership and teamwork.
  • Flexible thinking and ability to adjust expectations and actions as needed.
  • Interest and enthusiasm for working with youth teens partner organizations educators and families.
  • Artmaking skills proficiency in safely handling tools and equipment.

Physical Requirements and Equipment Usage:

  • Walking Standing and Sitting: The duties and responsibilities associated with this position will be performed in a stationary position (standing or sitting) for approximately 75 of the workday and will also require movement throughout museum spaces to interact with visitors and activate museum experiences.
  • Verbal Communication: This position frequently communicates with visitors while facilitating museum experiences. The Senior Manager will be expected to exchange accurate and helpful information and communicate issues to team members and/or supervisors.
  • Lifting: Occasional lifting and moving of furniture equipment and supplies weighing up to approximately 50 lbs.
  • Manual Dexterity: The Senior Manager may operate various equipment including but not limited to kilns saws hot tools computers programming equipment torches sharp implements.

Work Environment Hours of Work and Travel Requirements:

  • Weekend availability is required and evening availability is occasionally required.
  • Occasional local and national travel may be required.
  • Essential duties of this position will be performed in a museum environment which includes interaction with the public and exposure to children and families.

Clearances:

  • FBI fingerprints results PA Child Abuse History Certification (Act 33 and PA State Criminal Record Check (Act 34 clearances are required.
