DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Youth Center serves youth up to the age of 24 who are currently atrisk of or experiencing homelessness. The Youth Center offers services in an LGBTQ safe and affirming environment and serves as an entry point to assist youth making the transition from homelessness to housing. Our services include meals clothing support groups a charter high school GED and college prep program an employment preparation training and placement program case management counseling a crisis shelter and a transitional living program (TLP). Our communitybased programs include services for youth athome in school or in systems of care.
JOB SUMMARY: The Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator will provide oversight to The Centers leadership development and advocacy work with youth in schools ages 1226 who are lesbian gay bisexual transgender queer and questioning youth (LGBTQ) in Los Angeles. The role will primarily focus on working with identified high schools and community colleges in and around the Los Angels LGBT Center working independently with administrators teachers staff and directly with students to prevent substance misuse through education leadership development mentorship and advocacy. This role works closely with Center staff and community partners to help youth develop a sense of competence usefulness power and belonging.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
75 Program Coordination
In collaboration with the Policy team lead the Elevate Youth project to promote leadership and advocacy skills among youth ages 1226 as a strategy for substance misuse prevention
Oversee implementation of the Out for Safe Schools and Out for Safe Spaces programs including coordination of trainings distribution of toolkits and dissemination of collateral materials
Produce the annual Power in Prevention Day summit managing all aspects of planning and
20 Partnership Development
Build and maintain relationships with high schools community colleges and youthserving organizations to engage LGBTQ youth in leadership and advocacy programming
Serve as the primary liaison between Youth Services and the Policy team to support youthled advocacy campaigns that influence policy systems and environmental change
Provide ongoing technical support to partner school districts and youth agencies including resources training and consistent monthly communication
5 Program Evaluation and Reporting
Develop and implement evaluation tools to assess program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement
Complete monthend reports and fulfill administrative requirements to support internal tracking and funder compliance
Contribute to grant deliverables related to LGBTQ youth substance misuse prevention initiatives
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum 4 years experience working with atrisk youth in education school services or related experience
A passion for the Centers work and its mission with to make the world better for LGBTQ people
Bachelors degree in education psychology sociology or related field. Experience and/or current enrollment in a related degree program may be substituted for a completed degree
3 years experience in group facilitation and/or training
Working knowledge of and experience with school districts and school administrators
Strong communication skills interpersonal and organizational skills
Proficiency with MS Office and databases
Sensitivity to and appreciation of the particular needs and challenges of lesbian gay bisexual transgender queer questioning and other marginalized and atrisk youth
Availability to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends evenings and travel
Access to reliable transportation a valid CA Driver License and the ability to be insured
Experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of relevance to LGBTQ people
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races ethnicities nationalities sexual orientations gender identities socioeconomic backgrounds religions ages Englishspeaking abilities immigration statuses and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.
