Job Description

DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR JOB DUTIES

In the Department of Public Services Environmental Services Division the Heavy Equipment Operator will operate one or several types of power construction equipment such as motor graders bulldozers sers compressors pumps derricks shovels tractors or frontend loaders to excavate move and grade earth erect structures and maintain drains. This position may also repair and maintain equipment in addition to other duties.

Required Tasks

  • Drive tractortrailer trucks to move equipment from site to site.
  • Push other equipment when extra traction or assistance is required.
  • Test atmosphere for adequate oxygen or explosive conditions when working in confined spaces.
  • Repair and maintain equipment making emergency adjustments or assisting with major repairs as necessary.
  • Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions such as utility lines other equipment other workers or falling objects.
  • Locate underground services such as pipes or wires prior to beginning work.
  • Load and move dirt rocks equipment or other materials using trucks crawler tractors power cranes shovels graders or related equipment.
  • Operate tractors or bulldozers
  • Monitor operations to ensure that health and safety standards are met.
  • Keep records of material or equipment usage or problems encountered.
  • Check fuel supplies at sites to ensure adequate availability.
  • Talk to clients and study instructions plans or diagrams to establish work requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Educational/Experience Requirements

    • High school diploma or equivalent; AND
    • Must have Commercial Drivers License with a Class A with N endorsement; AND
    • At least seven 7 years of experience as a Drains Maintenance Worker; OR
    • At least eight 8 years of experience operating heavy equipment in a storm;
