The Medical University of South Carolina invites applications for the position of Division Chief of Applied Craniofacial Sciences in the College of Dental Medicine. The Chief will lead the Sections of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. The College of Dental Medicine envisions the role for this newly created division as a model for integrative educational innovation patientcentered interprofessional care and basic and translational research offered in a setting that utilizes advanced deployable technologies in a world class clinical setting. We are seeking applications for an open rank tenure track fulltime faculty position. The Division Chief provides leadership for faculty staff and residents in the Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Sections. There are 14 faculty members 10 staff members and 15 residents between the Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Sections. The position is available immediately. MUSC is South Carolinas only comprehensive academic health science center. It features Shawn Jenkins Childrens Hospital a freestanding stateoftheart facility with over twentyseven pediatric specialties and a newly constituted pediatric neurosurgical team for the treatment of the craniosynostosis.

Responsibilities include:

  • Didactic/clinical teaching and supervision of residents and predoctoral students in the pediatric/ orthodontic dentistry program
  • Direct patient care in the operating room as part of the faculty practice or in the Orthodontic Dental Faculty Practice
  • Align the department with University and College goals and objectives and facilitate and advocate for the departments interest.
  • Provide service and/or scholarly expertise to MUSC the profession and the community.
  • Participation in research programs and other collaborative activities within the MUSC community

Requirements

DDS/DMD degree from a US or Canadian dental school accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or equivalent.

Completion of a CODAapproved pediatric / orthodontic or combined pediatric/orthodontic dentistry residency program

Board Certified candidates will be given preference. However board eligible to become Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry or the American Board of Orthodontics within one year of the date of hire.

Eligible for a South Carolina dental license will be considered.

Applicants who have demonstrated excellence in teaching a history of funded research/training grants and publications will receive the highest consideration. Candidates with an MS MSD MPH or Ph.D. will be favored. Dual specialty training is also preferred. Candidates with experience treating children and adolescents with special healthcare needs is also desired. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The candidate must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills to relate to office staff faculty and senior leadership. They must display initiative a positive attitude and commitment to department goals and objectives. In addition the candidate should demonstrate the ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technology demonstrate the ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning and incorporate evidencebased oral health care and innovation in student learning and crucial thinking.

The successful candidate will have exceptional administrative and organizational skills and a national reputation as a leader in academic dentistry and research. The individual chosen will be responsible for visionary leadership management and stewardship of the departments mission related to research education and service. We particularly welcome candidates with a strong background in clinical/translational research a strong history of funded research interdisciplinary leadership skills and a commitment to equity and inclusion.

Review of candidates will begin immediately and apply prior to March 1 2024 to receive full consideration. A start date on or before July 1 2024 is preferred. The academic rank and salary will be based on the candidates qualifications and commensurate with their experience level.
