We are the Metropolitan Council the regional government for the sevencounty Twin Cities metropolitan area. We plan 30 years ahead for the future of the metropolitan area and provide regional transportation wastewater and housing services.More information about us on our website.

Metro Transit a division of the Metropolitan Council is one of the countrys largest transit systems employing more than 3200 people and provided nearly 78 million rides in 2019 through an integrated network of buses light rail and commuter trains. In 2016 Metro Transit was named System of the Year by American Public Transportation Association.



Hourly Pay Range: For candidates newly hired into the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) contract starting wage is set by the ATU contract. Internal hires will follow Metropolitan Councils union wage guidelines.

Hire: $23.88 hourly
After year one: $27.30 (based on ATU salary rates starting 8/1/2024
After year two: $30.71 (Subject to contract change based on ATU salary rates starting 8/1/2024
After year three: $34.12 (Subject to contract change based on ATU salary rates starting 8/1/2024

Additional information

Union/Grade:Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) / Work Class 22
FLSA Status: NonExempt
Safety Sensitive: Yes. Subject to random DOT drug tests.

What your work environment would be:
Ability to work with harsh cleaning compounds/solvents. Ability to work in an environment with loud noise and risk of electrical shock. Works near moving traffic or equipment. Exposure to fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals human and animal waste and vibration. Works in wet humid conditions and high precarious places. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions extreme cold and extreme hot.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to walk stand climb stairs bend or stoop for entire eighthour shift. Ability to work all shifts. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to exert and force up to and more than 100 pounds with assistance.

  2. Work Record Evaluation for Internal ATU applicants.
  3. We rate your education and experience.
  4. We conduct a structured panel interview.
Once you have successfully completed the steps above then:

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only) and a background check which verifies education employment and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a casebycase basis based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.

If you are already an employee of the Metropolitan Council you must pass a drug test (if moving from a nonsafety sensitive position to a safety sensitive position) and criminal background check if the job youre applying for is safety sensitive is a supervisory or management job is in the Finance Information Services Audit or Human Resources departments or has access to financial records files/databases cash vouchers or transit fare cards. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the position.
