Job Description
For 35 years Georgia Strait Alliance has played a leading role in bringing communities together to address the many threats to the Salish Sea. We are excited to be growing our team at a time of positive change and evolution in our the generous funding from Canada Summer Jobs we are hiring a summer Dock Walking position
Compensation: $24.00/hour plus vacation pay and sick leave
Preferred start date: May 26th 2025
Position duration: 34 hours per week; up to 16 weeks per Canada Summer Jobs requirements
Please note: We operate from MondayThursday but the position requires weekend and evening availability
Eligibility:
Due to funding restriction the successful applicant must be 30 years or younger on the date of hiring; hold Canadian citizenship permanent resident or refugee status; and be able to work in the federal electoral riding of Vancouver Quadra.
About the position:
Working closely with our Clean Marine BC Coordinator you will carry out outreach activities on behalf of the organization in support of our Dock Walking Program update important facets of our program and help launch our new CMBC app among other duties.
The outreach portion of the role will be focused on engagement with boaters in the Vancouver Quadra riding and surrounding areas at docks marinas yacht clubs and any boating related events to distribute our Clean Boater Kits Guides to Clean Boating and conduct our Boater Survey. Candidates will be trained and versed to help educate boaters about the resources and to gain a better understanding of clean boating principles.
The programs digitized app will require testing along with data entry to be compiled and submitted into the platform. Other key tasks will include assisting in updates to web page data callouts updating CMBC contact lists and maintaining a detailed inventory log of outreach materials and any other administrative tasks. The team has a wide range of roles and depending on needs and availability you may be asked to assist in campaign specific or GSA public outreach.
This position will require some flexibility of your schedule to work some weekends and evenings in order to attend boating and other GSA related events with detailed documentation and planning of your hours. Travel may be offered if you are able and based upon the budget. The successful candidate will also be required to attend all weekly staff meetings virtually. Work days are subject to change depending on weather conditions and you will be provided with a Personal Flotation Device and any other safety needs.
You will do great in this position if you are interested in best practices for boaters biodiversity and ecosystem protection community engagement inclusivity and diversity and are able to take initiative particularly in starting and maintaining conversation with folks. Having a keen sense of working as a team enjoying data entry with use of digital platforms and attention to detail are also important. If you have a positive attitude and eagerness to talk to people about important environmental and boating issues you would be a great addition to the team!
Experience and Qualifications
We understand that not all experience looks the same and encourage applicants to share how their experiences relate to the qualities below:
- Ability to engage and connect with folks of diverse backgrounds
- Taking initiative and willingness to talk with people in a variety of ways including in person by phone and email(e.g. approach folks proactively try different greetings to see which ones work best etc.
- Ability to participate in help plan and prepare for tabling at public events
- Helping with digital campaigns through the creation of content including taking photos of your activities for social media posts being willing to write short texts for blogs emails or social media etc.
- Digital skills organization and attention to detail in order to effectively compile and enter data track activities and inventory in spreadsheets communicate online and assemble Clean Boater Kits in a standard and consistent format.
It would also be helpful if you have any of the following skills qualifications or equivalentexperiences though they are by no means required:
- Boating experience and/ or training
- A Pleasure Craft Operators Certificate
- Candidates with fluency in languages other than English Indigenous people and those from racialized and/or marginalized communities and facing obstacles to participation including people with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Any environmental community engagement or marine background experience
Location: The position requires a combination of work done at home/remote from our Vancouver office and in the field.
