JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Undersea Systems Office (USO) within the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is seeking a Division Head for the Energy Science and Power Systems (ESPS) Division. The mission of the ESPS Division is to be the leader in the research design development and technology transition of advanced power and energy solutions for the US Navy and other Department of Defense (DoD) customers primarily in the undersea domain. The ESPS Division consists of five departments: Integrated Power Systems Energy Sources Integrated Power Systems Energy Conversion Instrumentation & Control Technology Concepts & Modeling and Experimental Support. Collectively these departments maintain the workforce knowledgebase and facilities to develop and demonstrate complete prototype power systems for unique specialized applications. This position may be filled as either a Research and Development Engineer or a nontenure Research Faculty.

You Will:
Direct five departments consisting of more than 50 engineers scientists and technicians
Ensure division personnel adhere to the highest standards of technical excellence
Recruit develop and retain extraordinary R&D engineering staff and faculty
Continue to enhance the research and engineering capabilities within the division
Provide oversight of research facilities and capabilities with the goal of continual improvement of capabilities equipment and safety of operations
Maintain the divisions knowledgebase and provide expertise in propulsion systems combustion processes energy storage nuclear power technology and alternative power to the Department of Defense (DoD) Department of Energy (DOE) other government agencies and to industry partners as directed by the government.
Identify and pursue new business development
Provide leadership and technical contribution to the of projects within the Division Office and Laboratory with the goal of facilitating efficient timely customeroriented project and with technically meaningful and relevant results
Required Education & Related Experience:
This position can be filled at multiple levels
Minimum: Masters degree in an Engineering or Science discipline plus 10years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred: PhD in Engineering Physics or Chemistry plus a minimum of 10years related experience.
Required Detailed Experience & Knowledge:
Prior experience in a similar research environment or in government/military
Knowledge of technologies and applications to include: Rankine Stirling and Brayton cycle engines metal combustion liquid metal reactors hybrid power systems nuclear power systems turbomachinery design and analysis hydrogen generation and storage electrochemical power systems advanced materials and structures computational fluid dynamics and power system modeling and simulation
Proven organizational and technical management skills
Experience with government offices sponsoring power and energy related technology
Strong interpersonal skills including team building and keypersonnel development
Record of technical accomplishments especially in the research areas noted above
Ability to obtain external funding for proposed research and form partnerships with the University government and industry partners
Willingness to travel to represent ongoing programs with sponsors and to develop new research initiatives
Excellent presentation skills and concise and effective written and oral communications skills
Prior experience with DoD DOE NASA and/or industrial research funding activities
Your working location will be fully onsite located in State College PA.
