About JMU:
Located in the heart of Virginias beautiful Shenandoah Valley the city of Harrisonburg is approximately 120 miles from Washington D.C. and Richmond VA. General Information:
This position leads a team to organize a twoweek camp experience for recruiting diverse youth to healthcare professions. An ability to model inclusive and nondiscriminatory practices in all activities is required. Through collaboration with the project team health professionals school officials community members and community professionals the position assists youth in learning about healthcare positions through handson experiential learning. This project will provide extensive orientation to support the success of those selected for these position(s).
Duties and Responsibilities:
Curriculum Development Designing engaging educational programs that align with camp learning objectives.
Instructor Coordination Recruiting and managing guest speakers to lead specialized sessions.
Activity Planning Creating and arranging handson activities for students.
Camper Engagement Ensuring campers are actively participating and benefiting from the program content.
Assessment & Feedback Evaluating the effectiveness of programs and making improvements.
Safety & Compliance Maintaining health and safety standards while ensuring a positive learning environment. Making sure that programming adheres to state and JMU policy.
Parent & Community Communication Keeping parents informed about camper progress and collaborating with JMU institutions.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge skills and or abilities required)
* Must have completed at least one year of postsecondary academic experience.
* Experience and knowledge of basic theories of individual and family development.
* Demonstrate previous (volunteer or paid) experience of working with diverse youth populations
* Familiarity with health professions
* One day free per week for site visits.
Secondary qualifications (Additional Considerations)
* Positive interpersonal skills with individuals from many levels of authority responsibilities professions and identities.
* Aboveaverage organizational skills and an ability to write well with some knowledge of data management through basic computer applications.
* An ability to follow safety instructions that reduce risks and convey those instructions to the youth clearly.
* Proficiency in computer skills and online applications.
* Pass a background check.
* Additional language skills beyond English are considered positively.
* An ability to follow other duties as requested for project success.
* Previous JMU employment is highly desired.
Additional Posting Information:
Working conditions and physical requirements:
Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time; to participate in physical activities that may require lifting squatting agility for quick movements and lifting boxes; to utilize office and medical equipment. Overnight duties/oncall shifts during camp may be required.
Conditions of Employment:
Students must be degreeseeking students enrolled on at least a halftime basis 6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
Students must have a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA.
