The primary role of the Assistant Director of Special Education is to provide daily oversight and monitoring of the instructional and administrative functions within the Special Education Department with emphasis on special education programming and staff. The Assistant Director supports the Director of Student Services with the integration of special education services while ensuring adherence to federal and state laws and regulations. Reports to: Director of Student Services in collaboration with Elementary and Secondary PrincipalsPrimary Job Responsibilities Include:
Demonstrates and provides Team leadership; promoting collaboration through effective mentoring and coaching of professional and support staffProgram management and coordination of 21st century buildingbased Special Education programs and services supporting students with special education needs.Recruiting training and maintaining adequate support staffing in collaboration with building principals. Recruiting supervising and evaluating professional staff members of the Student Services Department in collaboration with building principals.Identifies and leads professional development in pertinent areas of field such as: traumainformed teaching; cooperative learning; authentic assessment; higherorder thinking skills; student progress monitoring; and/or personal learning. Consultation and collaboration with district administrators especially building Principals regarding atrisk students tiered intervention and the referral process for special education. Visits classrooms regularly to assess and evaluate trends within cohorts of students to make recommendations regarding future programming and staffing needs in consultation with the Director of Student Services.Monitor classroom progress towards the district goal of inclusive learning environments; including program implementation student engagement technology integration student progress monitoring and teacher guided instruction. Initiates corrective action when necessary.Attends Team meetings to support teachers and Team Chair when necessary and effectively facilitates meetings to model department expectations as requested by the Director of Student Services.Delivers professional development regarding transition planning and oversees individual student Transition Planning inclusive of all necessary 688 referrals for indistrict studentsInitiates and informs the process for the identification and placement of students in Out of District programming. Advises the Director of Student Services on all cases involving local state or federal compliance considerations.Facilitates strong parent and community involvement.Active participant at building level administrative teams and positive representative of the Student Services DepartmentDesigns and presents monthly staff meetings; supporting the vision and mission of the Student Services DepartmentOther duties as assigned by Director of Student Services and PrincipalsTerms and Conditions of Employment:Salary according to Agreement between the Norwood School Committee and the Norwood Teachers Association (Unit B) 210 Days)Required Experience:
