About the Greys River Ranger District:

The Greys River Ranger District is one of six districts in the forest. It is best known for the Greys River corridor which contains the most highly traveled road in the forest and provides important accessibility to a diverse range of backcountry and front country recreation throughout the year. This diversity of opportunities is founded on a highly valued patchwork of areas for developed and dispersed camping motorized and nonmotorized travel hunting fishing and harvest of firewood Christmas trees and other forest products. Expanses of backcountry areas remain cherished havens for hiking horseback riding and other traditional uses.


The local communities of Star Valley enjoy multigenerational connections to the lands being managed based on longstanding forest use and rich local history. The district has a long established nationwide recognition for remarkable mule deer hunting and contributes significantly to Wyomings black bear hunting opportunities. The Greys River and its tributaries provide extensive well connected and intact aquatic habitat that is important to the conservation status of the Snake River cutthroat. The district also contains one of the worlds only coldwater periodic springs and portions of the historic Lander Trail.


In winter the district becomes a coveted destination for snowmobiling by providing easy trail rides and wildlife viewing challenging terrain for advanced riders and close proximity to quality snowpack for a multistate area. The recreation program in the district manages 4 rental cabins 4 open campgrounds a yearround robust outfitter and guide program hundreds of miles of motorized and nonmotorized trails and special recreation events of all kinds.


Star Valley is the collective name for the communities that make up the star valley front which runs parallel and through the Greys River Ranger District. It is located in Lincoln co WY between the Salt River Range in western Wyoming and the Webster Range of eastern Idaho. The altitude of the valley ranges from 5600 feet 1700 m) to 7000 feet 2100 m). Three major Wyoming rivers the Salt River the Greys River and the Snake River meet near Alpine Junction at Palisades Reservoir. There are approximately 10 communities that make up the star valley front and they vary greatly in makeup but are all fairly rural locations. There are 3 grocery stores along the valley several hardware/ maintenance/ and outdoor stores a moderate selection of restaurants and bars. Many services and stores are closed on Sundays.

Position Overview:

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Schedule: Four days a week for a 10hour day/40 hrs weekly. Possibility of working on weekends.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute 40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of Member 1 14weeks) $875/week ; Member 2 16weeks) $950/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses dispersed biweekly. The living allowance is a fixed rate determined by the USFS and ACE and is not flexible.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service and 640 hours of service. If the duration of a PLCeligible term is not long enough for Members to accrue 640 hours of service 16 weeks) the total hours served at the completion of the term may be eligible to be combined with hours accrued from another PLCeligible term to meet the 640 hours requirement. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Please see the ACE website for more information on PLC eligibility.

Relocation Assistance: ACE members will have access to up to $300 to be used for eligible relocation expenses. Further details regarding distribution of these funds will be provided during the interview process.

Gear Assistance: ACE members will have up to $300 to spend on eligible gear purchases. Eligible gear for this position includes boots work clothes equipment etc and must be approved by ACE staff prior to purchase.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures clear guidance on prohibited activities and networks for support.

Physical Demands Work Environment and Working Conditions:

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold rocky terrain swamp or wetland conditions biting insects and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self fellow staff/members or resources.

Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties one will be provided by the USFS or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the USFS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) typically provided by the USFS will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to USFS and ACE equipment training certification and safety protocols is required.
