JOB OPPORTUNITY
Join the City of Berkeleys Planning and Development Department in its effort to protect the health safety and welfare of citizens! As a Certified Housing Inspector I you will enforce building codes and regulations byperforming skilled work in the investigation reporting and followup of housing deficiencies primarily for existing residential units. You will work with property owners to gain compliance with codes and regulations that govern housing construction rehabilitation repair and use.
This work requires considerable independence and discretion in field inspections although more experienced Housing Inspectors are available for advice and assistance on highly technical matters.
See the full job class specification here: QUALIFICATIONSA typical way of gaining the knowledge skills and abilities for this position is graduation from high school and experience as specified below:
- Two 2 years of full time experience equivalent to an Assistant Inspector for a public agencyOR
- One 1 year of experience equivalent to a building inspector or housing inspector or code enforcement inspector for a public agencyOR
- Four 4 years of experience as a home inspector journey level carpenter electrician plumber building plans examiner public works inspector or permit specialistOR
- Three 3 years of experience in construction trades as a licensed general plumbing electrical or mechanical contractor superintendent or supervisor of building construction or any combination thereof.
Other requirements include:- Possession of an International Code Council (ICC) or California (CA) certification in Residential Building or Housing Inspection or Code Enforcement or equivalent ICC or CA Legacy Certification.
- Abilityto travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business incumbent must maintain a valid California drivers license and a satisfactory driving record.

Competitive review and assessment of responses to the supplemental questionnaire and applicants education training and experience to determine the best qualified candidates
Tests may consist of any combination of written oral or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include but are not necessarily limited to typing math reading writing and analytical skills; problem solving ability; computer and software proficiency or any other jobrelated knowledge skill ability or qualification.The examination process and datesare subject to change. TheCitymay without notice change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews.
