The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of highquality drinking water managing wastewater and stormwater and reducing air noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country with nearly 6000 employees. DEPs water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the systems 2000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the city.
New York City has approximately 140000 catch basins 114000 hydrants 90000 valves 14 gatehouses 3 reservoirs 68 groundwater wells a 100milliongallon underground storage tank and 7000 miles each of both sanitary sewers and water mains. The responsibility of maintaining these vast networks falls under the Department of Environmental Protections Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO). The primary responsibilities of the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations are the operation maintenance and protection of the Citys drinking water and wastewater collection (sewer) systems; the protection of adjacent waterways; and the development and protection of the Departments Capital Water and Sewer Design Program.
The Division of Distribution Operations is responsible for operating the water distribution system throughout the five boroughs. This includes operating and maintaining the shaft distribution chambers of the three City Water Tunnels and incity aqueduct the trunk main valves and pressure reducing regulators throughout the system pumping stations and incity treatment facilities; crossconnection inspections; installing and maintaining CCTV instrumentation and operational software systems for the bureau; and providing engineering direction for improvements to the entire system.
Working for the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations within the Division of Distribution Operations Shaft Maintenance the selected Machinists Helper will assist machinists and trades in the operation maintenance and repair of water supply equipment including valves gears and piping as well as other operating infrastructure as directed. The Machinists Helper will operate general machine shop equipment such as lathes shapers milling machines drill presses and grinders; use hand tools in the performance of related work and use precision instruments essential to the tasks; perform work in both permit and nonpermit required confined spaces; operate a motor vehicle setup/stock/replace tools and equipment carry tools and equipment into work areas shafts and chambers; adhere to all Agency EH&S policies and perform related work.
Some of the physical activities performed by Machinists Helpers and environmental conditions experienced are: climbing stairs and ladders; standing upright for extended periods of time; using vision to read small numbers and markings on gauges and equipment; using vision and hearing to avoid injury from overhead piping when working around structures and taking measurements and to avoid injury from rotating machinery; communicating orally in a noisy working environment; walking over wet and slippery concrete surfaces; working in areas containing gases from the combustion process and strong odors from grease lubricants and solvents; working in confined areas which may be dusty and dark; lifting metal objects weighing up to 60 pounds; and working outdoors in all kinds of weather.

1. Three years of fulltime paid experience acquired within the last 10 years as a
Machinists Helper; or
2. Not less than 1 years of such experience plus sufficient training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade or vocational high school or M.D.T.A. supported training program to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of approved trade or vocational school or M.D.T.A supported training.
