Job Description

Wofford College is hiring for a Studio Arts Manager. The Studio Arts Manager will have duties related to both the museum and studio art programs. This position offers a dynamic opportunity to provide support in the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts to both the Richardson Family Art Museum and the Department of Art and Art History contributing to the educational and creative missions of Wofford College. Reporting to the Art and Art History Department Chair and the Curator the successful candidate will work closely with the Curator and studio art faculty. The primary responsibilities of the Studio Arts Manager are to assist with the preparation and installation of exhibitions to manage the art studios and to hire train and supervise student workers.

The Studio Arts Manager is a fulltime salaried exempt position with a normal work schedule from 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday with occasional evening and weekend work as needed. Minimal hours of work performance are 37.5 hours/week. Throughout the academic year (August to July) time will be divided between museum and studio responsibilities with a flexible allocation depending on seasonal demands. Highneed periods for the museum (May to August December and January) will be required 75 of the time with the Museum and 25 of time spent with Studio Art. All other times have the expectation of 75 Studio Art concentration and 25 Museum.

JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Duties:

  • Hire train and supervise student employees in Studio Art

  • Effectively manage and delegate tasks to student employees

Gallery Exhibitions:

  • Independently coordinate the annual juried student exhibition Hot Now

  • Assist faculty with coordination of Whetsell Senior Studio and Studio Art related exhibitions

  • Prepare artwork and related documents for shipping in gallery exhibitions

  • Install and deinstall gallery exhibitions

  • Fabricate exhibition pedestals and furniture for gallery use

  • Manage lighting for gallery exhibitions

  • Coordinate and oversee student workers during exhibition installations and deinstallations

  • Patch and repair studio art exhibition spaces

Studio Management:

  • Ensure safety and maintenance in the woodshop and other studios

  • Host a minimum of 6 open studio hours per week in the woodshop

  • Coordinate and manage student workers for weekly general maintenance and organization across all studios including Painting/Drawing Printmaking Ceramics Sculpture and Digital Studio

  • Prepare and reset studios before or after every semester

  • Assist faculty with ordering and replacing materials and furniture in studios

Museum Duties:

  • Assist with the installation and deinstallation of museum exhibitions

  • Deliver and pick up exhibitions

  • Prepare archival framing for displaying artworks

  • Oversee prep room storage and exhibition fabrication

  • Build crates for artwork transportation

Supervision:

  • Reports to both the Department Chair and Museum Curator

  • Attend biweekly meetings with supervisors to maintain clear communication and expectations

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Strong organizational and detailoriented skills

  • Ability to independently problemsolve and plan proactively

  • Capability to perform heavy lifting (approximately 50 lbs. and operate trucks and scissor lifts

  • Proficiency in fabricating exhibition supports pedestals and studio furniture

  • Skilled in woodworking and training students on the use of power tools

  • Experience in exhibition installation

  • Professional demeanor and communication skills

  • Ability to delegate tasks to appropriate personnel

  • This role includes handling items or objects that weigh up to 50 pounds (or greater that will require mechanical assistance). Physical movement in addition to climbing a ladder and working on a scaffold is expected. The appointee will be expected to drive a cargo van and operate and work from a scissor lift (after training).

Education/Experience

A bachelors degree in Studio Art or equivalent experience working in a closely related field is required for appointment. Woodworking and fabrication experience is required therefore providing a portfolio of images will be necessary for application consideration. The ability to work independently prioritize projects with varying deadlines and delegate tasks and oversee student workers is also important to this positions success.
