Job Description

Expected hours of work per week: 1015

Work Location & Hours: Sanderson Hall or Kresge Library MondayThursday 3:005:30 p.m.

Purpose of Position: to assist Philosophy Department faculty in instruction scholarship and other departmental activities

Qualifications for Position:

  • Upperclassman freshmen are not eligible for this position
  • Friendly caring for the success of others honest teachable punctual willing to tutor
  • Able to communicate clearly orally and in writing
  • Philosophy major who has successfully completed both PHI 101 and PHI 102
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office suite including Word Excel and Powerpoint
  • Basic knowledge of Windows operating system
  • Basic knowledge of Canvas
  • Able to handle sensitive information concerning fellow students responsibly
  • Able to organize files both manually and electronically

Expected Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Grade quizzes daily class preparation assignments and possibly parts of exams
  • Assist professor(s) in keeping accurate records of student completion of homework quiz grades etc.
  • Provide tutoring service for students struggling in philosophy courses especially introlevel philosophy courses (Note: this might entail attending classes in some cases in addition to being available for students outside class.
  • Occasionally lead a class or group discussion for a professor
  • Copy or scan materials for classes
  • Provide assistance in research for professors
  • Copy or scan materials for professors
  • Assist Philosophy Club president in organizing and running events as needed
  • Assist Philosophy Department chair in organizing advertising and running the annual philosophy conference (the Gordon H. Clark Symposium)
  • Other general clerical assistance to professor(s) as needed e.g. cataloging of books assistance in discarding used materials (including the shredding of sensitive documents) etc.

Competencies

  • Philosophy major
  • At least a sophomore who has successfully completed both PHI 101 and PHI 102
  • Friendly teachable willing to tutor punctual
  • Able to communicate clearly orally and in writing

  • Critical Thinking in the form of assessment of students daily homework helping students work out action plans for improvement in their performance in PHI 101 (intro to philosophy) and PHI 102 (logic) regular assistance to the Philosophy Department professors/supervisor that helps anticipate needs that students are likely to have moving forward
  • Global Literacy displayed by appreciation of ethnic and cultural differences that winsomely empowers students to work together to form a vibrant engaged learning community
  • Leadership through encouraging and equipping students for success in their introlevel PHI courses and modeling for them the attitudes and skills needed for success in the study of philosophy
  • Professionalism by being dependable and attentive to details
  • Teamwork including building strong work relationships with the professors and the president of the Philosophy Club
  • Technology: manage and use technology effectively to benefit the students he or she is serving (especially Canvas)

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones.
