Functieomschrijving

Europes energy transition is among the greatest challenges of our time. Its goal: To make Europe the first climateneutral continent by 2050 at the latest. The Netherlands and Germany have therefore set themselves ambitious goals to expand offshore wind energy: as early as 2030 Germany and the Netherlands want to reach a capacity of 30 and 22.2 Gigawatts respectively. Energy from offshore wind farms in the European powerhouse North Sea will play in this a crucial role. TenneT guarantees that this energy will reach the mainland and in the most environmentally friendly way possible. That is why we have developed the 2GW program with a unique transnational approach. And thus increase the pace and efficiency of the energy transition.

For the Strategy department of TenneT we are looking for an:

Innovation Manager

Introduction

The European Union wants to deploy 300 GW of offshore wind by 2050 to meet its climate targets and to reduce its dependence on fossil fuel. The most efficient way of transporting electricity from offshore wind is via multiterminal high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids.

The project Enabling interoperability of multivendor HVDC grids (InterOPERA) funded by Horizon Europe unites 21 European partners to unlock the potential of HVDC grids and foster the transition of the European energy sector at large scale.

The InterOPERA project will define technical frameworks and standards for electricity transmission and accelerate the integration of renewable energy. Ensuring that HVDC systems HVDC transmission systems or HVDC components from different suppliers can work together making them interoperable is a top priority to accelerate Europes energy transition.

InterOPERAs main objective is to make future HVDC systems mutually compatible and interoperable by design to improve the grid forming capabilities of offshore and onshore converters and pave the way for the first HVDC multiterminal multivendor multipurpose reallife projects in Europe.

TenneTs role

TenneT is participating the project and leading the Work Package 2 (WP2. WP2 deals with specification and assessment of interoperability for multiterminal multivendor HVDC systems. The aim of WP2 is to define the functional framework of MV MT HVDC systems together with operational level interfaces. WP2 has first to specify basic functional requirements for HVDC subsystems and functional requirements for GFC of HVDC systems and PPMs. WP2 will assess the interoperability of the C&P systems developed by the vendors in WP3 using the simulation framework from WP1. Thanks to specifications and results coming from all WPs DC Grid Code recommendations for MV MT HVDC systems will be established and a verification process and benchmark for multivendor interoperability of HVDC systems will be provided.

Under this work package there is specific tasks that TenneT NL will be leading/coordinating. This task focuses on the interaction studies to be performed in order to investigate interactions of converters and other assets (protection system cables transformers etc. at the AC and DC connection points. Attention should be put on the practicalities of handling such studies in a multivendor situation (e.g. setting up the responsibilities of stakeholders). It is foreseen that interaction studies will be based both on offline EMT simulation with detailed models as well as on realtime HIL simulation. After the validation of the simulation platforms in other work packages the results will be integrated into these platforms. The conclusion of the interaction studies will be used to provide recommendations for the use of the functional requirements and specifications in future reallife projects.
