The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Design and Engineering Services is looking for a Technical Engineer / Architect 1 to help us

Keep Alaska Moving!





What you will be doing:

  • Conducting Professional Peer Reviews:Provide expert reviews of plans specifications and contract documents to ensure alignment with engineering standards.
  • Ensuring Compliance:Scrutinize documents with a keen eye for detail to verify adherence to State and Federal regulations including those from FHWA and FAA.
  • Managing Contracts:Create and review PS&E packages preparing bidding documents with a strong focus on quality control and accuracy.
  • Collaborating Across Teams:Work closely with Maintenance & Operations design construction and planning teams to ensure seamless project coordination and success.
  • Providing Technical Support:Offer technical legal and logistical expertise for aviation and highway projects supporting the full contract lifecycle.
  • Innovating Contracting Approaches:Explore and implement new contracting formats handling necessary contracting waivers to optimize project outcomes.
  • Leading Compliance Efforts:Serve as the regional coordinator for compliance with various agencies stepping in as needed to assist the Chief of Contracts in maintaining project integrity.

The working environment you can expect:

This position is based at the Peger Road offices in Fairbanks where youll join a collaborative team of multidisciplinary professionals focused on completing key transportation projects for the State of Alaska. The office offers ample parking a friendly atmosphere and a coffee shop nearby for break times. Daily responsibilities involve close collaboration with various teams within the DOT&PF including engineers environmental staff and planning professionals as well as frequent interactions with the public consultants and municipal entities to ensure effective communication and coordination on projects.


Who we are looking for:

  • Civil Engineering:Knowledge of the concepts principles theories and methods required to plan design construct operate and maintain facilities such as buildings transportation systems water and sanitary systems and other public works systems.
  • Reading Comprehension:Understands and interprets written material including technical material rules regulations instructions reports charts graphs or tables; applies what is learned from written material to specific situations.
  • Technical Competence:Uses knowledge that is acquired through formal training or extensive onthejob experience to perform ones job; works with understands and evaluates technical information related to the job; advises others on technical issues.
  • Written Communication:Writes in a clear concise organized and convincing manner for the intended audience.

Registration as a professional engineer (PE) or professional architect and two years of professional engineering or architectural experience as an Engineer 1 Architectural Assistant 3 or higher with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.


Special Note:

Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
