NYC Department of Finance (DOF) is responsible for administering the tax revenue laws of the city fairly efficiently and transparently to instill public confidence and encourage compliance while providing exceptional customer service.
The Legal Affairs Division serves as the inhouse legal department for DOF providing professional and comprehensive legal advice and services supporting a full range of city tax and other revenuerelated matters. Legal Affairs Division attorneys and staff handle various legal issues including real property taxes and exemptions business income and excise taxes collections parking violations treasury land registry Conciliation Bureau conferences FOIL and employment law.
The Legal Affairs Divisions Information Law and Legal Counsel Unit seeks an enthusiastic selfmotivated Information Law Attorney Intern to be part of a team handling a variety of legal counsel information law privacy and other data and disclosure related issues. Under close supervision and direction duties and responsibilities will include the following:
Assist the Records Access Officer with the review and processing of Freedom of Information Law requests.
Research and assist with reports on information data and privacy matters. Handle electronic case tracking and management.
Perform legal research and draft detailed memoranda legal responses policy statements and other documents.
Assist in drafting preparing and reviewing legal letters notices reports and other communications.
Handle electronic case tracking and management.
Create and update tracking documents and maintain required records for compliance with legal requirements.
Under close direction may serve as liaison with the Law Department on agency litigation matters.
With guidance Attorney Interns may prepare and review petitions or cases for administrative hearings.
Participate in projects and handle matters in other areas as determined by the General Counselor Division manager.

This position will require employees to have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to an additional background investigation before appointment. The candidate(s) will be required to pass the FTI background investigation as a term and condition of employment.

Qualifications :
Graduation from an accredited United States law school as defined in the Rules of the New York Court of Appeals (Sections 520.3 or 520.5 or admission to the New York State Bar.
