Description

The Team
The Food Safety Inspection Branch (FSIB) with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food plays an important role in supporting B.C.s agrifood sectorwhich includes everything from farming and fishing to aquaculture and food processing. Its a sector that fuels our economy and benefits everyone in the province. At FSIB the top priority is keeping the public safe by making sure the meat seafood and other agrifood products made in B.C. are safe to eat. The Meat Inspection team specifically looks after the inspection and licensing of provincially licensed abattoirs helping ensure they meet the standards set out in the Meat Inspection Regulation..

The Role
As a Meat Hygiene & Agrifood Inspector you will be responsible for inspecting provincially licensed abattoirs conducting both antemortem and postmortem inspections to ensure that meat handling procedures comply with provincial policies. Your role involves effective communication educating facility operators and staff on regulations and managing conflicts as they arise. Additionally you will assist in training new meat inspectors assess livestock management practices ensure animal welfare standards are upheld and conduct initial food safety inspections of provincial slaughter establishments.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Training and experience working as a meat inspector in a slaughter establishment OR
  • Secondary School graduation (or equivalent) with training and experience in meat processing OR
  • A Diploma in animal science veterinary technician food science or meat processing.

Preferences

  • Preference may be given to candidates with previous meat inspection experience.

Provisos:

  • Must be able to work in a physically demanding environment including working with repetitive motions.
  • If requested provide medical confirmation of sensory ability related to sight smell and touch.
  • A valid drivers license with no restrictions.
  • May be required to use own vehicle on an expense paid basis.
  • Overnight travel may be required.

About this Position:
This position is located in Duncan.
This is a temporary opportunity until March 31 position may be extended or become permanent.
This position is a part time as and when needed opportunity with no guaranteed minimum hours. The position supports peak slaughter season and hours may be limited during slower periods.
An eligibility list may be established for future permanent and / or temporary opportunities.
